The Friction Materials Engineer will play a full and active role in the activities and operations of the Friction Materials team with specific responsibilities for the design, manufacturing, review, analysis and/or characterization of both physical and dynamic properties of carbon friction materials and oxidation protection systems.
Responsibilities
Review and analyze data sets.
When required, lead small sub-projects within larger carbon projects.
Under the guidance of the Lead Carbon Engineer, support carbon/carbon composite material characterization and development work. Characterize materials using various techniques including optical and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) microscopy.
Write material processing documents and maintain current processing documents.
Participate in conceptualizing, planning and executing carbon Research & Development (R&D).
Expected to interface with carbon production teams in various locations.
Supports Root Cause & Corrective Action (RCCA) for qualification / design / manufacturing issues.
Creation and review of technical requirement documents under the guidance of Lead Carbon Engineer.
Under the guidance of the Lead Carbon Engineer, help to ensure all program targets are satisfied; includes technical performance, non-recurring costs (NRC), recurring costs (RC) and project milestones (Schedule). This involves coordination with other Engineering functions to support the equipment development.
Required to actively support Continuous Improvement (CI) initiatives within the W&B Centre of Excellence.
Consults with and seeks guidance from the Lead Carbon Engineer, Product Line Expert (PLE), SME (Subject Matter Expert), and Chief Engineers as required.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor degree in Mechanical, Chemical, or Materials Engineering required. Master degree preferred.
Years' Experience: Entry Level Position 0-2 years of engineering experience in tribology, carbon/carbon processing, carbon oxidation protection or field related to aircraft carbon/carbon brake technology desired.
Skills:
Background in carbon/carbon composites is required. Understanding of Chemical Vapor Infiltration (CVI), high temperature processing and friction wear and tear (tribology) of carbon and carbon oxidation protection systems desired.
Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project and Visual Basic Programming.
Good communication skills – ability to communicate opinions, ideas, or facts to others in formal or informal environments.
Available to travel as needed (10-15%)
