Summary

The Microbiome Core offers high throughput automated DNA extraction and Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) using the Illumina MiSeq platform. These services are focused on the analyses of microbiomes in multiple environments and is provided to laboratories across the University of Michigan and to clients from institutions worldwide. The laboratory is seeking a scientist with experience in molecular biology who is adept at working in a collaborative team.

Responsibilities*

The laboratory provides NGS services to investigators on campus and throughout the world who are exploring the role of microbes in health and disease. The candidate will work primarily with a group of senior laboratory personnel to assist and collaborate with researchers within the laboratory and beyond.

Duties include:

Project Management:

  • Correspond with customers and collaborators both on and off campus regarding sample submission and protocols used within our laboratory, including supplying documentation used for publication purposes;

  • Research and execute methods and update standard operating procedures (SOPs);

  • Schedule and coordinate weekly activities in the Microbiome Core.

Laboratory Work:

  • Follow established protocols to extract, purify, quantify and sequence amplicons used to determine the bacterial and fungal composition of microbial communities;

  • Identify microbes using a MALDI Biotyper;

  • Conduct transwell experiments with human organoids and microbes from the human gut microbiome;

  • Contribute to maintenance of equipment in the Microbiome Core.

Required Qualifications*

A Masters degree in Molecular Biology, Microbiology or other related field, including three or more years of experience in a laboratory using molecular biology techniques such as nucleic acid isolation and quantification, PCR, gel electrophoresis. Applicant must have strong computer and meticulous record keeping skills. Excellent organizational, time management, multi-tasking and problem-solving skills are required.

Desired Qualifications*

Experience with eukaryotic cell culture and anaerobic microbiology techniques is desirable. Background that would facilitate learning statistical methods to compare microbial communities is welcome.

Background Screening
