GENERAL FUNCTIONS:

Candidates must display a wide continuum of language skills in American Sign Language and English. The person in this role will consistently exhibit excellent internal and external customer service.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Hearing interpreters will effectively interpret between ASL and spoken English.

Deaf interpreters will effectively interpret between ASL, other forms of visual communication, and written English.

Provide excellent customer service while maintaining a respectful and professional attitude with customers and colleagues.

Work effectively in a team environment; receive support from and provide support to colleagues.

Exhibit the ability to meet performance and customer service expectations with minimal supervision.

Enhance interpreting skills through continuing education and training.

Maintain, as applicable, compliance with any national, state, or local licensure and/or certification requirements.

Maintain a flexible work schedule to meet the various interpreting needs in the community setting.

Ability to work independently and multitask.

Organized, responsible, professional, and have positive interpersonal skills.

Willingness to work with supervisor in other related responsibilities when interpreting is not necessary.

Job Requirements:

EDUCATION:

Preferred:

Associates degree in liberal arts with concentrations in Education, Human Services or other related field

RID certification

Required:

Associates degree in liberal arts with concentrations in Education, Human Services or other related field

EXPERIENCE:

At least three years' experience providing ASL interpreting in an educational setting.

Experience working with diverse populations of college students.

Ability to successfully use PC hardware, office application software (word processors, time sheets, etc.)

Ability to utilize multiple technology platforms.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

This person provides interpreting services using American Sign Language to individuals who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Interpreting assignments may include VRI or in-person services classes, meetings, or events in a wide range of higher education settings. In addition, this person will adhere to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Professional Code of Conduct and maintain an advanced working knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act and how it pertains to the Deaf community.

RELATIONSHIPS:

This position reports to the Assistant Dean of Student Services.

SALARY AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

This is a part-time appointment at up to 19.5 hours per week contingent upon student registration. Position is compensated at a rate of $20.67/hour.
