Binghamton University Binghamton University Community Schools (BUCS) School Mental Health Site Supervisor in Binghamton, New York

Salary: $60,000 plus dependent upon experience (10-month position)

Binghamton University Community Schools (BUCS)--an initiative housed in Binghamton University's College of Community and Public Affairs (CCPA)--promotes the adoption of the University Assisted Community School model in K-12 schools and school districts locally, regionally and nationally. BUCS has been awarded two five-year grants designed to educate the next generation of school-based mental health providers serving youth and families in high needs schools. To achieve this goal, BUCS works collaboratively with CCPA's Department of Social Work Field Education Office to place social work student interns (known as BUCS Social Work Fellows) in high needs school districts in Broome and Tioga counties. BUCS School Mental Health Site Supervisors deliver and facilitate didactic instruction along with on-site instruction where Fellows implement in-person and virtual interventions that address and improve the mental health of youth and their families. School Mental Health Site Supervisors report to the BUCS School Mental Health Clinical Director and this is a 10 month position. As the Fellows' on-site social work instructor, the Site Supervisors' duties include:

  • Serve as BUCS Social Work Fellows' instructor in the school setting.

  • Provide and facilitate education for Fellows around social work assessments and interventions that promote mental health.

  • Meet regularly with individual Fellows to provide constructive feedback and to highlight areas of strength and those in need of improvement.

  • Facilitate a weekly group supervision with assigned Fellows.

  • In collaboration with school personnel and BUCS staff, develop, implement and execute a social work services plan that leverages social work practice requirements to promote socioemotional well-being and mental health of youth and families. Planned activities may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Orient and on-board BUCS Social Work Fellows to school buildings and school communities in partnership with a designated school-based team.

  • Co-facilitate individual and group sessions to model professional skills for social work interns.

  • Support social work students with assessment and progress notes associated with clinical practice skills.

  • Train and monitor social work students to perform home visits, make intentional family outreach, and facilitate "family cafes".

  • Support Fellows in implementing tele-mental health interventions for students and families referred for services.

  • Oversee provision of direct services for students and families and provide field-based instruction for BUCS Social Work Fellows.

  • Help Fellows apply effective social work practices, and reflect on the connection between the Social Work curriculum and their field experiences and observations.

  • Model the effective provision of school-based mental health services to build Fellows' skills and confidence and to strengthen their interests in pursuing careers in school-based mental health.

  • Develop an integrated approach to support school initiatives to address student and family needs

  • Attend relevant school meetings to understand the youth, school, and community strengths and needs.

  • Establish and maintain ongoing collaborative relationships with school faculty and staff.

  • Coordinate with school personnel to obtain referrals for youth and families to participate in social work programs and receive services.

  • Make regular home visits with Fellows to better understand and meet family needs and to demonstrate and model effective family engagement practices.

  • Plan and implement family engagement activities, events and strategies aligned with identified school and family needs.

  • Collaborate with Binghamton University's Department of Social Work

  • Attend trainings and/or seminars to remain current with social work degree requirements and social work competencies.

  • Attend regular professional development events hosted by Binghamton University faculty and BUCS staff.

  • Ensure BUCS Social Work Fellows adhere to assignments and protocol associated with their field requirements

  • Work with social work department staff and faculty to identify and leverage extra support for BUCS Social Work Fellows as needed.

  • Data collection and record keeping

  • Document services provided by BUCS Social Work Fellows

  • Maintain clinical records outlining services provided by BUCS Social Work Fellows

  • Track BUCS Fellows' field placement, training and orientation hours to ensure required field hours are met, review and approve Fellow's time logs on a regular basis.

    Job Requirements:

Required:

  • Bachelor degree with two years mental health or human service experience required.

  • School experience required.

Preferred:

  • Strong preference given to those with Master's in Social Work.
