Gasparilla Island Administration is looking for a self-motivated park service professional to fill an Assistant Park Manager position, providing visitor services, maintenance, protection, administration, and resource management. This position requires a high energy, dedicated, innovative person who is committed to protecting and interpreting Florida’s natural and cultural resources. The incumbent must have experience in the management of personnel and knowledge of agency policies. The incumbent will work with the Park Manager to supervise park operations at four locations (Gasparilla Island, Cayo Costa, Stump Pass Beach and Don Pedro. and ensure agency standards are met. This position with the Park Manager supervises 8 full time employees, 3 part time employees. Residency in the park is required in a 2-bedroom/ 1-bathroom house provided by the state located on Cayo Costa. The applicant must be able to operate motorized boats in all weather conditions

Separated from the mainland by Charlotte Harbor and Pine Island Sound, this island is part of a chain of Gulf Coast barrier islands. Swimming, snorkeling, fishing and nature study are popular activities that can be accessed at any of the five parking lots. The park is located on the south end of Gasparilla Island on the Boca Grande Causeway (private toll) at County Road 775 and Placida.

    Pay:

    Base salary: $3,657.34 month/$43,888.08 annual

    Your Specific Responsibilities:

    Compliance with the processing requirements of Chapter 215.422, F.S. is mandatory. Persistent failure to comply with this section by any agency of the state shall constitute good cause for discharge of employees duly found responsible, or predominantly responsible, for failure to comply.

    This is managerial work assisting the Resident Park Manager III in directing the activities of Gasparilla Island Administration, providing Visitor Services, Resource Management, Maintenance, Administration and Protection of Cayo Costa, Gasparilla Island, Don Pedro and Stump Pass Beach State Parks.

    The incumbent of this position exercises independent judgment in formulating or assisting in the formulation of policies and procedures which have significant impact in personnel administration and/or preparation and administration of budgets.

    VISITOR SERVICES-Explains facilities and services provided for public use, enjoyment and education; meets visitors, answers questions, provides information and directions in an accurate and professional manner. Attempts to resolve visitor complaints while maintaining good public relations. Provides natural and cultural history interpretive programs and services via presentations, walks and other programs and unit specific services as directed.

    RESOURCE MANAGEMENT–Participates in and supervises the resource management program. Implements ecological burning plan for fire type plant communities; recognizes communities, utilizes control burning techniques and maintains fire lanes. Implements vegetation and wildlife management plans; recognizes communities and maintains optimum species control via natural and chemical means. Implements site restoration projects such as reforestation and erosion control. Implements water resources management plans.

    MAINTENANCE - Identifies maintenance needs through daily inspections. Maintains maintenance schedules and supervises the staff to assure maintenance on a daily, weekly and yearly basis is regularly performed. Supervises and assists with the maintenance of grounds, facilities and equipment. Constructs, maintains, and repairs small buildings, fences, trails, service roads, fire lanes, boardwalks, campsites, picnic sites, boat ramps, docks and all other necessary facilities. Maintains cleanliness of grounds and facilities.

    ADMINISTRATION-Participates in employee training, supervision and discipline. Supervises the staff in fiscal, purchasing, and property procedures and policies. Participates in the administration of the collective bargaining agreement and maintains good employee relations. Coordinates work schedules and assignments. Checks reports, fee collection, and miscellaneous records prepared by the staff.

    PROTECTION - Ensures park rules are enforced pertaining to all facilities and resources, and use thereof, for the enjoyment of the visitor. Prepares and implements the Park Protection Plan in accordance with Operations Policy Manual.

    OTHER–Performs other related duties as required.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Florida Park Service management, operations, and mission

  • work rotating shifts including evenings, weekends, and holidays

  • understand and apply rules, directives, laws, regulations and policies

  • maintain a valid driver license

  • operate motorized watercraft

  • successfully complete background and fingerprint check.

  • reside on park property

    Preferred criteria:

    Ability to handle motorized watercraft up to 32 feet.
