Additional Information:

  • The CoS will typically work on-site a minimum of three days a week on campus, or as the work requires in any given week.

This is a hybrid position based on our campus in Cambridge, MA. Salary Range : $151,200 - $273,600

Note: Starting salaries typically fall in the lower half of the salary range; however, they are ultimately determined by the scope of the position, the candidate's relevant experience, and internal equity.

The CoS maintains close contact with members of the senior leadership, faculty, and administrative teams, operates at a strategic, operational, and tactical level to advance the Dean’s priorities and initiatives through:

  • Strategic Planning and Project Management: Develops and leads strategic plans to meet the goals and objectives of assigned projects and provides input to the Dean on near-term and strategic issues. Partners with project teams and stakeholders, manages risks and issues, and communicates and monitors progress to ensure that projects stay on track.

  • Tracking Progress: Maintains and monitors a reporting system to track progress and ensure momentum on major goals, including compiling data as appropriate. Keeps the Dean apprised of major issues, anticipates problems, and identifies approaches to resolve issues.

  • Developing Communications: Partners with colleagues as appropriate in the Office of Communications & Public Affairs, the Dean’s Office, and with other senior leaders across the school to plan and draft communication efforts coming from the Dean. Provides support to the Dean to produce presentations and reports for University and external audiences (e.g., events involving alumni, government, philanthropy, industry partners, conversations with peer institutions, etc.). Ensures timely preparation of materials for the Dean's upcoming meetings and events by providing background research, preparing talking points, speeches, and presentations, and writing memos and other materials.

  • Relationship Management: Works closely with senior leaders at HKS and other University offices, including those of the President, Provost, and other Harvard school deans, to advocate for and collaborate on Kennedy School and University priorities.

  • Administrative Management and Operations: Oversees the administrative operations of the Dean’s office, including budget development, workflow, scheduling and preparation of briefing materials; communication and correspondence; scheduling and agendas; and convening meetings. The CoS will create the necessary organization, workflow, and responsibilities for maximum efficiency and effectiveness in the Dean's office. Manages time-sensitive requests and urgent situations while balancing daily and long-term projects.

  • Supervising Team: Supervises and drives the work of a team in the Dean's office, including setting goals and ensuring continued growth and development. Provides feedback, and delivers thoughtful, constructive performance reviews.

  • Representing the Dean: As needed, represents the Dean in meetings, calls, or related initiatives and briefs the Dean and Leadership on important takeaways and developments.

The Chief of Staff (CoS) will support the Dean’s efforts to advance the research, teaching, and public engagement missions of the Harvard Kennedy School (HKS). This position serves to strengthen the existing and highly valued partnership between the Dean and the School’s senior administrative and faculty leadership.

The CoS will oversee a team in the Dean's office and advance the agenda of the Dean and the School. The CoS will assist the Dean with the identification and implementation of priorities and strategic initiatives, establish workflows and timelines, and monitor progress in advancing these priorities. The CoS will anticipate risks and provide recommendations and contingencies for the Dean's consideration. The CoS will approach the work with a cross-functional (e.g., centers, departments, schools, and central administration) mindset and will assume lead responsibility for cross-organizational projects and programs, working with faculty and other professional staff, as directed. The CoS will lead the development and management of special projects, aligning resources, benchmarking, and tracking progress. The CoS will work across departments both within the Kennedy School and across Harvard to ensure inclusive and collaborative approaches to advancing the Dean’s priorities. The CoS will also serve on the School’s Local Emergency Management Team (LEMT).

Further, the CoS serves as a key partner to the Dean in conceptualizing, framing, and problem-solving on both near-term and strategic issues. The CoS represents the Dean's voice in meetings as required.
