St Josephs Indian School Lead Carpenter in Chamberlain, South Dakota

Summary of Position

The Lead Carpenter is responsible for the construction, installation and repair of structures and fixtures. The position is further responsible for assisting the Carpenter Supervisor with determining priorities of projects and work orders. This is a nonexempt position.

  • Inspires trust, develops staff and manages performance.

Responsibilities

  1. During regularly scheduled meetings, serves as assistant to Carpenter Supervisor to determine priorities of projects and work orders. Regularly communicates with supervisor on the status of projects and work orders.
  2. Selects materials and structural units, i.e. lumber, doors, cabinets, and paneling. Inspects them for quality assurance and to ensure conformance with local, state and federal codes and ordinances.
  3. Assists Carpenter Supervisor to determine sequence of activities concerned with fabrication, assembly, and erection or structure.
  4. Gives progress reports regarding projects to the Carpenter Supervisor. Assists supervisor with budget preparation and the purchase of carpentry tools and related equipment.
  5. Assists Carpenter Supervisor in determining power and carpentry tools needed for projects, inspecting them for damage and safe operation.
  6. Inspects work completed to insure conformance with specifications.
  7. Oversees and provides routine maintenance of wooden structures and items.
  8. Complies with all safety and health requirements whether established by management or by federal, state or local law.
  9. Performs other responsibilities as required by the Carpenter Supervisor.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Crew Management Preferred
  • Valid SD Drivers License

Physical Demands

  • Uses both hands and wrists repetitively for prolonged periods.
  • Driving is required.
  • Some supervision may require standing for prolonged periods.
  • Frequently lifts, carries or otherwise moves and positions objects weighing up to 30lbs.
  • Occasionally exerts up to 50lbs of force
  • Regularly bends, stoops, crouches and climbs stairs.
  • Must have the capability to apply oneself physically over long periods of time
  • Uses the abdominal and lower back muscles to support park of the body repeatedly over time without becoming fatigued.
  • Position requires working outdoors during the summer and winter.

Expectations of Hours Worked

  • 40 hours/Week, evening and weekend on-call as required.
