Provide maintenance of exterior campus landscape to include lawns, gardens, flower beds, hedges,

walkways, plazas, streets and all associated components such as trees, shrubs, and irrigation systems.

Stabilize, repair, and replace fences, walls, curbs, etc.

Duties, functions and responsibilities may include: mow lawns, string trim, skilled pruning of ornamental

plants and hedges, weed planting beds, rake leaves, hand-pick loose trash, external garbage barrels,

dumpsters, etc., stabilize, repair and replace fences, gates and walks; clean out drainage ditches and

culverts.

Assist with snow removal operations. Duties, functions and responsibilities may include: hand shoveling

stairs and walkways, spreading ice melt products, operating truck mounted plows and sanding

equipment as well as the operation of skid steer track loaders, front end loaders and backhoes as

needed in support of other Landscape Services operations.

Support the University with office moves and furniture moves, special event and function setups. Duties

include moving furniture, setting up chairs and tables, moving equipment, transporting

equipment/boxes from campus to/from warehouse, and other campus duties as assigned.

Identify, cultivate and maintain a variety of botanical specimens on campus from lawns and formal

garden areas, which includes transplanting, preparation of soil, planting, watering, fertilizing, pruning

and pest control.

The skill in the application of herbicides and insecticides and the ability to identify, plant, transplant,

fertilize, irrigate, cultivate and prune trees, shrubs, and plants is critical for success in this position. Mix

fertilizer according to instructions and calibrate sprayers to apply fertilizers as directed; calculate

appropriate application rates; spray lawns, shrubs, and trees with fertilizer, herbicides, and insecticides.

Whenever Management determines it possible, the Gardener I may be assigned to work with a

Gardener II in order to assist in Gardening duties which will expand the Gardener l's skills and relevant

experience.

Requirements

The following qualifications are required and must be demonstrated by presenting certificate

(s) and o license (s) or candidate must be able to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities through

an in-field evaluation and assessment.

Valid Massachusetts driver's license;

Must be able to lift and/or carry 50 lbs.

Massachusetts State Hoisting License

Massachusetts Pesticide Applicators License Required Education:

Associates in Applied Science in ornamental horticulture, landscape design, turf grass management,

arboriculture or similar.

OR

5-week landscape management/horticulture certificate program or equivalent, and

3-5 years landscape maintenance experience including the application of herbicides
