The Senior Accountant is expected to stay current on applicable accounting standards and ensure that all work is performed in accordance with these standards. The role involves utilizing advanced capabilities in the Colleague Finance, Advancement, and Student modules, as well as the Synoptix report writer, to perform work efficiently, accurately, and timely. A strong emphasis is placed on payroll reconciliation experience, which is considered the most critical aspect of this role.
Responsibilities
Prepare and ensure the accuracy of monthly and year-end financial statements along with other standard internal reports.
Prepare and file all tax forms and legal filings to ensure the fund remains in good standing.
Oversee the annual audit process, preparation of the audit report, and review of the IRS form 990.
Provide accounting guidance to the executive director of the foundation, the treasurer of finance, the treasurer of investments, and other board members upon request.
Review the work of the gift processor and provide guidance to other development office employees.
Provide accounting data for proposals, analyze event reports, and assist in the preparation of reports for donors.
Collaborate with staff members in the development office, finance office, and departments to prepare budgets and monitor spending for scholarships and programs.
Monitor spending of foundation funds and work to remove barriers to spending.
Perform payroll reconciliation to ensure accuracy and compliance with financial standards.
Essential Skills
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent.
Five years of progressively responsible experience in accounting or financial management, preferably in a non-profit.
Extensive experience in payroll reconciliation.
Proficiency in accounting, Excel, audit, payroll, and payroll tax.
Strong skills in general ledger, journal entry, and Synoptix.
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
Ability to supervise and review others' work.
Ability to work with minimal supervision and resolve problems independently.
Experience with database management.
Proficiency with various software packages.
Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
CPA preferred.
Experience with Colleague Finance and Synoptix (academic-specific software).
Openness to learning new technology.
Work Environment
This position is based in an educational institution in Howard County, providing great benefits including a 37.5-hour work week, 4 weeks of accrued vacation, a week off between Christmas and New Year's, spring break, and 4 personal days. Initial training will be conducted in-office, followed by the option to work from home for 2 days a week after evaluation. The role requires proficiency with various software packages and the ability to handle multiple tasks under pressure.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $33.00 - $41.00/hr.
