Definition

Under direction, is responsible for coordinating tree planting, removal, or maintenance programs, and completing tree inspections and surveys; performs related duties as required.

Examples of Work

Coordinates and directs the activities of multiple forestry crews engaged in tree pruning, removal and planting, and stump grinding;

Supervises forestry staff by assigning, scheduling and approving work activities, and preparing performance evaluations;

Inspects trees on City property to determine the need for pruning, removal, or other maintenance;

Monitors and examines trees for signs of insects, diseases, or environmental stresses;

Develops and implements the forestry preventive maintenance program within an assigned area;

Investigates complaints from property owners concerning injury or damage to trees on City property;

Inspects and evaluates tree damage resulting from storms and vehicular accidents to estimate staffing and equipment necessary to remove or repair the tree;

Oversees the City’s tree planting programs and nursery;

Determines the kinds, numbers, and locations of trees to be planted on the streets and parks of the City;

Inspects property prior to tree planting to ensure the location is appropriate for proper tree development;

Prepares reports and maintains records regarding forestry activities within assigned areas;

Collects and compiles data for inclusion in the Street Tree Survey program;

Attends community and commission meetings as needed to represent the department;

May apply fertilizers, insecticides, pesticides, fungicides, or herbicides as needed to ensure the health of the tree.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a bachelor’s degree in forestry, urban forestry, horticulture, or a closely related field and three (3) years of experience planting and caring for trees and plants in tree care, landscaping, or nursery operations, including two (2) years of experience supervising employees engaged in these activities. Substitution(s): Possession of a valid Arborist Certificate issued by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) may substitute for the required education.

Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.

Possession of valid license issued by the Ohio Department of Agriculture as a Commercial Applicator in one (1) or more of the following categories: Forest Pest Control, Industrial Vegetation, or Ornamental Pest Control may be required for some positions upon completion of the probationary period.
