5 Temporary General Laborers out of the Thief River Falls location:

  • 1 Highway Maintenance position. The purpose of this position is to perform highway maintenance activities, so roadways and roadsides are safe, clear and in good condition according to MN/DOT standards. This position will perform work to support current staff in this unit, and under general supervision, assists in setting up traffic control and performing flagging duties at work sites, weed whipping, cleaning culverts, removing Adopt-A-Highway bags and debris from roadsides, removing dead trees, planting, seeding, etc. This position works 6:30 am - 5:00 pm, Monday - Thursday. MnDOT offers some flexibility on a season with a term of approximately 4/23/25 - 10/21/25.

  • 2 positions in Construction Inspection. The purposed of this position is, under general supervision, to assist the construction inspectors on job sites with materials testing, quantity documentation and basic duties to ensure program deliver requirements of the unit are accomplished. These positions work 7:00 am -3:30 pm, Monday - Friday, with probable overtime over the summer construction season. MnDOT offers some flexibility on a season with a term of approximately 05/21/250-09/23/25.

  • 1 position in Surveys. The purpose of this position is, under general supervision, to assist in performing routine survey activities and operate and maintain survey crew equipment and supplies. This position works 6:00 am - 4:30 pm, Monday - Thursday. MnDOT offers some flexibility on a season with a term of approximately 5/21/25 - 10/23/25.

  • 1 position in Bridge. The purpose of the position is, under general supervision, to assist the bridge crew in performing maintenance and inspection of bridges to preserve structural soundness for the safety of the traveling public. Tasks include but are not limited to: assisting in setting up traffic control and performing flagging duties at work sites, bridge flushing and cleaning, and other duties as assigned. This position works 6:30 am - 5:00 pm, Monday - Thursday. MnDOT offers some flexibility on a season with a term of approximately 4/9/25 - 10/21/25.

2 Temporary Transportation Generalist positions: (1) Crookston Signs Unit, (1) Crookston or Thief River Falls Traffic Unit.

  • The purpose of the Sign position is to perform routine traffic signing and maintenance of signs to ensure the safety of the traveling public. This position performs activities required for the installation of new signing and messaging and activities for maintenance of existing signs and messages, safely operates heavy equipment; performs pre and post trip inspections, and tracks sign inventory. This position works from 6:30 am - 5:00 pm, Monday - Thursday. MnDOT offers some flexibility on a season with a term of approximately 5/21/25 - 10/21/25.

  • The purpose of the Traffic position is to collect traffic count data, complete data entry of these counts, and operate and maintain traffic count equipment. This position sets traffic collection tubes and counts as needed, operates and maintains the equipment used to perform the traffic counts work, record collected count data and enters the information into a software system, and keeps an inventory of consumable items. This position works from 7:00 am - 3:30 pm, Monday - Friday. MnDOT offers some flexibility on a season with a term of approximately 5/21/25 - 9/23/25. Positions tasks include, but are not limited to:

Minimum Qualifications

To qualify, Laborer General applicants must meet the following qualifications:

  • Knowledge of methods, tools, and equipment used in maintenance and construction work sufficient to carry out detailed work directions.

  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor work sufficient to complete assignments.

  • Strength and agility necessary to bend, lift, dig, reach, and load heavy materials.

  • Endurance necessary to perform indoor and outdoor tasks under extreme environmental conditions, such as heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind.

  • Valid Class D Drivers License at time of application

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.

  • Surveys - Ability to understand survey equipment including the operation of digital level equipment, personal computers, and GPS receiver.

To qualify, Transportation Generalist applicants must meet the following qualifications:

Signs:

  • Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with no air brake restrictions is required at time of application. (Class A preferred.)

  • Experience: One year of experience performing any of the following: sign installation and maintenance, roadway and roadside maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, operating heavy equipment, farm experience, snowplow operations, road construction.

  • Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.

  • This incumbent will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. New employees must pass a pre-placement drug test for evidence of use of marijuana, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP) and amphetamines (MDMA,MDA and MDEA) and acetyl morphine (6-AM)..

Traffic:

  • Valid Class D Driver's License at time of application

  • Experience: six months of experience performing traffic engineering activities or related activities, and six months of experience in any of the following areas: road maintenance, construction, design, soils/materials/permits, signs, surveys, traffic engineering etc.

  • A two-year civil or construction technology degree or equivalent may substitute for one year of traffic experience. Four-year degree equivalencies include architectural, civil or mechanical engineering; land surveying/geomatics. (In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu or work experience, you must submit a copy of your transcripts.)

  • Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.
