JOB SUMMARY

The level 3 welder must pass a 6G (Stick) welder qualification test. The candidate will complete a Flux Cored Arc Welding Process (FCAW) in the 6G position test. If the candidate fails the FCAW 6G test, he or she would still qualify for employment with the understanding that he or she must retest and pass the FCAW 6G test, no later than 90 days of employment. The welder should also be able to fabricate and fit complex structural assemblies such as structural members, beams and components of the mast, substructure and oilfield skid assemblies.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lays out, positions, and secures parts and assemblies according to specifications, using straightedge, combination square, calipers, and measuring tape

  • Tack-welds or welds components and assemblies, using SMA, GTA, or FCA welding processes

  • Cuts workpiece, using oxy-acetylene torches

  • Able to Air Carbon Arc Gouge

  • Removes rough spots from workpiece, using portable grinder, hand file, or scraper

  • Welds components in flat, vertical, horizontal, or overhead positions

  • Analyzes engineering drawings and specifications to plan layout, assembly, and welding operations

  • Develops templates and other work aids to hold and align parts

  • Determines required equipment and welding method, applying knowledge of metallurgy, geometry, and welding techniques

  • Ten or more years of welding experience on drilling rigs and associated equipment

  • Certifications for welding structural steel such as Grade 50, and 4130.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • A total commitment to working safely and participating in all HSE programs.

  • Minimum of 7 to 10 years welding experience on drilling rigs and associated equipment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Prolonged Standing and Walking: The Welder may have to stand and work in the confines of the drilling floor for a sustained period of time without a break and for a total time of up to 12 hours per work day. The employee stands and/or walks on steel decking and grating. Surfaces can be wet and/or muddy.

  • Sitting: The Welder may have to sit in the riding belt while suspended from the air hoist for up to 30 minutes.

  • Bending/Stooping, Squatting, Kneeling and Crawling: The Welder will continually get in and out of the positions of bending, squatting and kneeling throughout the time he/she is involved in the job task for up to 12 hours. Sustained period of bending/stooping, squatting or kneeling of longer than 3 -5 minutes or crawling more than 4 to 6 feet without an opportunity to change position as desired will generally not occur.

  • Overhead Work: The Welder is required to work overhead on tasks such as chipping and grinding for as long he/she can tolerate. He/she will work in these positions overhead while handling the 5 lb. grinders for up to 5 – 10 minutes at a time (or until fatigued) followed by a change in activity position. The Welder may also swing an 8 or 16 lb sledge hammer overhead for up to approximately 6 to 8 swings in succession.

  • Arm-Hand Steadiness: The ability to keep your hand steady while moving your arm or while holding your arm and hand in one position.

  • Range of Motion Required: Functional cervical, trunk, upper and lower extremity ranges of motion are required to perform tasks safely and efficiently.

  • Climbing Stairs, Ladders and Uneven/Unprotected Structures: The Welder may climb to and from the ground to the drill floor (25-50 steps) approximately 12 times in a given day with an increase to as often as 20 to 30 times during rig up and rig down operations. The Welder may work while suspended from a riding belt or while standing or sitting on various beams 6 feet or more off the drill floor while attached to a secure structure with a safety harness.

  • Balance: Good static and dynamic balance is required for sitting, squatting, walking, carrying, lifting, pushing, pulling and climbing the ladder up the derrick.

  • Lifting and Carrying: The Welder may be called upon to lift and carry a variety of objects throughout the tour each day. These objects will vary in size and weight as well as frequency on a daily basis.

  • Emergency Fire Response: The Welder may be the first person on the scene of a fire. If this occurs, he/she may have to handle a fire extinguisher for a short period of time. The fire extinguisher (up to 36” x 6”), weighing 50 lbs., will be lifted for the duration of the emergency or the time it takes to expend the extinguisher which generally is 5 to 10 minutes or until the fire response team arrives.

  • Grip Strength: The Welder must have good grip strength to allow him/her to operate essential tools such as grinder, hand file, scraper, etc., as well as to lift objects required in the job.

  • Manual Dexterity: The ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate or assemble objects.

  • Visual Abilities: Must be able to identify hand signals at a distance of 100 feet. When working in different areas the Welder must be able to read 1 ½” numbers from approximately 15 feet. The ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).

  • Multi-limb Coordination: The ability to coordinate two or more limbs (for example, two arms, two legs, or one leg and one arm) while sitting, standing or lying down. It does not involve performing the activities while the whole body is in motion.

  • Work at Height: Ability to work at heights following safe work practices.

  • Written Communication: Must be able to read and comprehend company reports, safety regulations, work orders and supply lists. Also must be able to read the training manuals.

  • Cognitive Component/Handling Stress: The Welder must have good short and long term memory and the mental stamina to stay alert and attentive for up to 12 hours a day so as to make safe decisions and use proper judgment. The job requires quick and smooth motions involving very heavy equipment and forces. The Welder must pay close attention to what he/she and the others are doing so as to ensure a safe operation. The Welder must be able to cope with the mental stress placed on him/her to meet the constant demands of the job. The employee must be able to quickly understand directions and carry out these instruction in a quick yet safe and efficient manner. All employees must report any unsafe or potentially unsafe situations to their supervisor immediately.

  • Information Ordering: The ability to arrange things or actions in a certain order or pattern according to a specific rule or set of rules (e.g., patterns of numbers, letters, words, pictures, mathematical operations).
