Indian Health Service Medical Support Assistant in Crownpoint, New Mexico

Summary The position is located with the Ambulatory Care Nursing Branch within the Division of Nursing Services. Incumbent will be located at Pueblo Pintado Health Center in Pueblo Pintado, NM. The position performs referral clerk duties, record keeping and miscellaneous clerical support duties associated with patient care and treatment arranged outside of the work unit for testing, and subspecialty consultation. Responsibilities This position is being re-advertised to solicit additional applications. Applicants who applied previously need not reapply unless submitting updated and\/or missing information. Makes arrangements for patients for outside testing or subspecialty consultation ordered by a provider. Calls for an appointment time; provides requested demographic and insurance information to the consultant's office. Reviews documents such as consultations and referrals for completeness prior to forwarding to outside referral sites. Communicates and coordinates with the Clinical Director or designee for medical priority assignment and Purchase Referred Care (PRC) Services for the authorization of all referrals for services to non-IHS facilities. Notifies PRC of an out-of-system referral. Provides customer services by greeting patients and visitors in a courteous and respectful manner, answering inquiries or addressing requests, and directing them to the appropriate personnel. Reviews physician's orders for treatments and tests; then routes requisitions, consultative requests, and referrals in accordance with established protocols. Arranges for transportation services for patients to and from scheduled appointments, when needed. Stocks and maintains supplies at appropriate levels. Coordinates supply deleting supplies as necessary. Participates in clinic staff meetings, in-service and educational programs. The employee is required to work rotating weekend schedule and holidays and may be required to work rotating shifts. Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): GS-05: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level; OR, Four (4) years above high school. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Experience in scheduling patient appointments, retrieving patient charts, printing Health Summaries, stamping patient care encounter forms and appropriate charge tickets, and delivering to appropriate staff. Performs clerical duties related to patient referrals, admissions, and discharges and routes patient records according to established protocols. Keeps patients records in order with all forms properly identified. Maintains record confidentiality and safeguards medical information. Able to assess the patients need for urgent and emergent appointments with appropriate provider and clinic. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Additional Information Per IHS policy (SGM 21-04) IHS selectees to positions located in Federally operated hospitals, health centers, and clinics must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 before entry on duty or have IHS approve a medical or religious exemption. Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit. Government housing is not available. This position has NO promotion potential.
