Description of Work

This position is located in Cumberland County within the Bridge Unit. Work includes, but is not limited to the maintenance, repair, and construction of State-owned bridges, culverts, and pipes. This position is technical in nature and labor intensive. Employee will work in and around heavy traffic, near heavy equipment, with hand and power tools and various other pieces of equipment. Employee must be able to work in a close team environment or independently, as needed. Employee will be exposed to briars, poisonous plants, spiders, and snakes when working around or under bridges. Employee must be able to train lower-level workers. Work includes a variety of functions including equipment operation, pile driving, carpentry, concrete work, machine operation, contract inspect, repair of culverts, bridges, large pipe bulkheads and pile clusters, sandblasting/painting, demolition work, welding, structure inspect, trenching/shoring, lead paint removal, steel fabrication and steel beam repair, installation, and maintenance of erosion control. Must be willing to attend training and continuing education classes to keep up to date on all state/federal regulations and maintain certifications in all required areas (ie: traffic control and environmental stewardship). Ability to perform assigned tasks and to follow oral and written instructions as directed by Supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Experience in pipe installation and installation of erosion control devices.

  • Experience in the layout of traffic control in work zones.

  • Working knowledge of standard bridge maintenance and construction procedures.

  • Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, asphalt patching, or snow and ice removal.

  • Knowledge of Work Zone Safety and NCDOT workplace policies and procedures.

Additional Expectations:

This position responds to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, etc. during normal business hours or during emergency callback situations and scheduled night work. May require work during non-traditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. This position is also subject to out-of-town travel during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances. Employee in this position must have working knowledge of the principals involved in the operation and use of the equipment to which it is assigned. Employee must have the ability to climb, bend, traverse steep and uneven terrain, and work in extreme temperature conditions. Ability to work in close proximity of high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment. Employee must have the ability to lift and carry 50lbs. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Safety toe footwear is required.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and (3) three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements:

Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
