Description

The Office of Disability Affairs is a division of the Civil Rights, Inclusion and Opportunity Department at the City of Detroit. The mission of the Office of Disability Affairs (ODA) is to increase independence, opportunities, community participation, safety, and wellness for persons with disabilities in the City of Detroit, and to ensure inclusion, representation, and equity for persons with disabilities as it relates to City employment, programs, and services.

The Community and Government Liaison is a full-time position that reports to the ODA Director and serves as a vital link between the city government and the local disability community. The position requires exceptional communication, relationship-building, and problem-solving skills

Examples of Duties

  • Develop and maintain contacts with city department leaders and city council staff under the guidance of the ODA Director and the Mayor’s Government Affairs team

  • Monitor administration and council activities, including new ordinance, funding opportunities, and resolutions that could impact the disability community

  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with community members, organizations, and leaders

  • Attend community events, meetings, and forums to understand the concerns and needs of the disability community

  • Collaborate with the marketing and communications team to develop strategies that enhance the department’s public image and reputation

  • Assist in organizing public awareness campaigns and events to raise awareness of the disability community, accessibility, equitable opportunities, and relevant disability regulations

  • Work closely with various internal departments to coordinate community engagement activities and government-related projects

  • Track and report the progress of initiatives and projects established by the Office of Disability Affairs

  • Assist the ODA Director in mitigating potential conflicts and finding solutions to resolve challenge through effective communication and mediation techniques

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor degree from an accredited college in a related discipline, or equivalent experience, or a minimum of 2 to 5 years related experience.

Preferred:

  • Strong interest in disability affairs, community development, and public policy

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree with a background in public policy, government, or human services

  • Experience in disability rights laws, community organizing, and advocacy preferred

  • Excellent writing, research, and communication skills

  • Strong organizational and time management skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and ability to use other online platforms to streamline work

  • Experience with city policies and procedures is preferred

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be substituted to meet the education and experience requirements of this position.

RETIREMENT BENEFITS

City Employees Retirement System

As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:

• Completion of thirty (30) years of service;

  • At age sixty (60) if you have at least ten (10) years of service, or

  • At age sixty-five (65) with eight (8) years of service.

• In the event of disability, other eligibility rules apply);

  • An early, actuarially reduced, retirement is offered after you have attained at least twenty-five (25) years of service;

• Employees are vested after ten (10) years of service, regardless of age.
