Job Description

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is seeking a Nurse Supervisor to join the team at the State Training School (STS) in Eldora, which provides supportive counseling and behavioral health treatment for young men, ages 12-18, who were adjudicated delinquent. This is a full-time position with a flexible schedule, occasional on-call responsibilities, and opportunity for advancement, growth, and development.

The primary responsibilities of the Nurse Supervisor are to oversee all nursing staff and medical department needs including all health care needs for students. This position operates as the Health Authority for the facility and manager of the medical department working collaboratively with other departments to promote and provide a holistic approach to student wellness. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Supervising all nursing staff and assigned personnel including performance evaluations, scheduling, orientation, and training.

  • Providing direct care and nursing coverage when applicable.

  • Ensuring all intake medical assessments are completed by an RN.

  • Completing Security Risk Items (SRI) checks for medical inventory.

  • Completing policy reviews annually and as needed.

  • Displaying a high level of initiative, effort, and attention to detail, while demonstrating critical thinking, decisive judgment, and commitment under minimal supervision.

  • Ensuring that work rules are followed and confronting employees in a respectful manner when needed.

  • Administering medications to students in different areas on campus.

  • Understanding and applying current nursing theory, trends, and practices and educating teams.

  • Rendering and/or assisting with nursing care, treatments, dressings, and other physician orders.

  • Teaching CPR/First Aid and other related trainings.

  • Maintaining accurate medical STATS.

  • Documenting medical records appropriately per current practice and policy.

  • Performing Duty Superintendent and second management duties.

  • Ensuring oversight of student prescriptions, administration of medications, and medication counts and checks.

Working at STS comes with a special perk! This location offers access for staff to the impressive on-campus gym during off student hours. This includes 3 full size basketball courts, two fully stocked weight rooms with machine and free weights, showers, and lockers. We also provide a cardio roomfor staff onlyfeaturing exercise mats and advanced treadmills and stationary bikes. Usage of these resources is completely free for all STS staff.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

a. Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Iowa by the Iowa Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact Administrator’s Agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing; and

b. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in nursing; and

c. One year of full-time professional clinical work experience in a correctional environment or in any combination of nursing specialty areas including epidemiology, geriatrics, maternal and child health, nursing education, pediatrics, public health, mental health or psychiatrics, or intellectual disability.

2) All of the following (a and b):

a. Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Iowa by the Iowa Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact Administrator’s Agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing; and

b. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in nursing.

3) All of the following (a, b, and c):

a. Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Iowa by the Iowa Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact Administrator’s Agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing; and

b. One year of full-time professional clinical work experience in a correctional environment or in any combination of nursing specialty areas including epidemiology, geriatrics, maternal and child health, nursing education, pediatrics, public health, mental health or psychiatrics, or intellectual disability; and

c. A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in part b), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in nursing equals one year of full-time experience.
