Job Description

The Director, Research Systems, directs a team that develops and implements computer applications to support drug discovery at Gilead Sciences. Leads the development of applications OR integration of vendor applications.

By utilizing knowledge of the functional areas of research, defines workflows, or data analysis systems needed by Research. Sets the priorities for solutions based on the potential impact to drug discovery.

Through lively debate will help define the evolving role of the Research Informatics group in Research. Will expand the groups capabilities with chemoinformatic, and biological informatic tools for the life sciences.

Collaborates with other team members and researchers to perform business analysis and develop functional requirements for solutions.

Performs analysis to define the best architecture for applications in the Gilead ecosystem.

Possess and will utilize experience defining and deploying solutions in a pharmaceutical company. Will be responsible for all stages of a software life cycle - from conception to development to successful deployment with change management techniques.

In addition to leading, will also contribute by writing code and developing software, Will write code in C#, MVC, ASP .NET and SQL, and will complement in-house code with vendor-based biological- or chemical-informatic scientific tools. Will balances the use of programming languages with the benefits of more flexible and easily supported scripting language’s (e.g., Pipeline Pilot).

Must be able to work in a flexible but demanding environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Specific Responsibilities

RI Operations

  • Contributes the support of functional areas, modalities, and TAs.

  • Influences the operation of functional areas supporting improved workflow, dataflow.

  • Participates in and prompts key decisions regarding operations.

  • Routinely present to senior management (i.e., development proposals, and progress).

  • Provides guidance on for a broad range operational aspect of RI.

  • Contributes to resourcing/staffing decisions across Informatics.

  • Will mentor junior and mid-level developers in the best development practices.

  • Will share in the responsibility to help to define roles with the group.

Software Define & Design

  • Responds to requests for applications and identifies gaps in infrastructure.

  • Can independently create specifications to align with project priorities.

  • Will independently write software applications.

Software Delivery

  • Will write and release tools that will impact Research.

  • Can create architecture plans that are consistent with the existing ecosystem.

  • Will develop and deploy via the Agile framework in defined timelines.

  • Will demonstrate a strong, modern, up-to-date technical ability.

Leadership

  • Will demonstrate independent scientific or informatic leadership.

  • Able to provide guidance to others on the development of applications.

  • Will help to inform resourcing/staffing decisions across informatics related activities.

  • Will mentor and develop personnel while assisting in the impact of direct reports.

Enterprise Role

  • Advises operational strategy across multiple departments with those in a similar role.

  • Advises strategies for informatics across multiple projects.

  • Influences decision-making and strategy at the SBC department level (e.g. – Sr. Staff) as it relates to infrastructure and technical innovations.

  • Contributes to or authors external publications and/or presentations.

  • Proactively partners across research functions and with departments outside of research (including external organizations) to advance the Gilead company strategy.

  • Leverages network of cross-functional colleagues.

Essential Job Duties and Functions

  • Is responsible for the impact of systems defined and deployed on the drug discovery cycle.

  • Oversees / advises on feasibility and suitability of new systems/applications.

  • Serves as the program lead on expansive projects spanning multiple functional areas of Research.

  • Contributes to the development of long-term strategic plans informatics in Research.

  • Has a nuanced view of the IT landscape to determine the appropriate balance of Cloud and on-premises technology.

  • Incorporates knowledge of the team capabilities and IT environment when developing plans.

  • Acts as a mentor across Informatics and Research.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Applies knowledge of drug discovery from experience at a pharmaceutical company.

  • Works on complex problems with regular use of ingenuity and creativity.

  • Is conversant in scientific goals and methods.

  • Remains connected and fluent with industry technology, including best practices for research

  • Utilizes direct expertise to evolve a vision of informatic technology and architecture.

  • Is a valued advisor to other team members and to scientists needing systems.

  • Can optimize the informatics environment using available resources.

  • Maintains in-depth knowledge of scientific principles sufficient to support infrastructure.

  • Individuals must possess the necessary scientific education as it relates to informatics.

  • Has influence and impact on delivery solution which will impact ongoing therapeutic project team and other functional groups by responding to or anticipating their needs.

  • Demonstrates sufficient communication skills to representative RI to other corporate bodies

  • Demonstrates an interest and ability to manage technical, scientific, operational, and administrative aspects of a team.

Education and Experience

15+ years of relevant experience an MS in Computer Science with relevant pharmaceutical industry experience

The salary range for this position is: $226,185.00 - $292,710.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans*.
