General Atomics Mechanical Design Engineer in Fredericksburg, Virginia

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our High-G Components group in Fredericksburg, VA.

Under general supervision, this position supports the mechanical systems engineering staff in the design, analysis, investigation and resolution of routine engineering problems of moderate scope regarding missile or projectile programs. Assignments are for mid-sized projects or phase(s) of larger projects(s) and outlined in terms of general engineering activities. Contributes to the completion of assigned engineering tasks, which involve the exercise of independent judgment and discretion about matters of significance. Documents findings and implemented solutions and communicates results to project engineering staff. Contacts are primarily internal within the team. May provide direction to design staff or technicians.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Applies basic technical knowledge to analyze, investigate and resolve assigned routine mechanical engineering problems relating to missile or projectile components or subsystems.

  • Performs functional testing of equipment and systems by utilizing standard engineering and scientific principles.

  • Obtains and analyzes test data. Occasionally supports testing at test ranges and sites within the U.S.

  • Perform detailed design, material selection and structural analyses, assembly and testing of packaging for various prototype instrumentation, data loggers, guidance and control electronics used in smart gun-fired projectiles or missiles.

  • Develops assembly work instructions for the assembly of components and subassemblies for development and testing utilizing mechanical assembly practices including torque specifications and any required specialized tooling.

  • Develops appropriate documentation of findings and implemented solutions and communicates results to project engineering staff. May be required to make technical presentations to project staff.

  • Maintains the strict confidentiality of sensitive information.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Responsible for observing all laws, regulations and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company. Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.

Job Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a bachelors or masters degree in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and two or more years of engineering experience with a bachelors degree. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance is required.

  • Demonstrates the ability to follow and apply basic engineering knowledge, adapt standard techniques, and utilize the required diagnostics, tools and equipment, while ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.

  • Must have design experience with either SolidWorks or Creo.

  • Must be able to understand new mechanical concepts quickly and apply them accurately throughout an evolving design environment.

  • Working knowledge in the application of geometric dimension and tolerancing as presented in ASME Y14.5M.

  • Production and fabrication experience, familiarity with MasterCAM programming, and ability to operate manual and CNC machinery, including 3D printers to support prototype development is desirable.

  • Good communication, computer, and interpersonal skills are required to enable an effective interface with other professionals, to produce appropriate documentation, and to present results to a limited internal audience.

  • Must be able to work both independently and on a team.
