DESCRIPTION

LPN UNIT MANAGER

Essential Functions

Maintains the comfort, privacy and dignity of residents and interacts with them in a manner that displays warmth, respect and promotes a caring environment.

Supervises nursing care provided by nursing assistants, licensed vocational/practical nurses and other for whom they are administratively or professional responsible.

Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the company policies and applicable laws.

Plans, assigns and directs work.

May assist in interviews, recommend hires and trains staff.

Receive call-off calls and find replacements for absent staff, and transfer staff among units as needed.

Schedules and adjusts lunch and rest breaks.

Approves errors in time cards and authorizes overtime as necessary.

Provides counseling, and disciplines employees following the progressive discipline steps which may result in termination of employment.

Demonstrates the knowledge and clinical expertise required to effectively supervise all nursing activities in the facility or the units which assigned.

Performs various tasks assigned by the floor nurse including checking vital signs, weighing residents, applying creams/ointments and collecting specimens.

Assist with new admissions, re-admissions and assist with the transfer of residents to different rooms within the facility.

Reviews and implements all nursing procedures and systems relatives to the units.

Assess and evaluates the systems which facilitate the delivery of quality resident care.

Assess and evaluates the performance and competency of staff on the floor.

Must be knowledgeable of individual care plans and support the care planning process by providing supervisors with specific information and observations of the residents needs, preferences and report any behavioral changes.

Performs nursing assessments regarding the health status of the resident.

Contributes to the residents assessment (MDS/RAPs) and development of a plan of care.

Makes nursing diagnosis which serve as the basis for the strategy of care.

Selects and institutes appropriate nursing intervention which might be requires to stabilize a residents condition and/or prevent complications.

Consults with physician or licensed nurse practitioner and completes rounds when in facility.

Clarifies any order or treatment regime believed to be inaccurate, non-effective by consulting with physician or licensed practitioner when making a decision not to administer medication or treatment.

Knows rational for the effect of medications and treatments and correctly administer same.

Accurately reports and documents the residents symptoms, responses and status.

Demonstrates measures to promote a safe environment for residents and others.

Assure that established infection control and standard precaution practices are maintained when providing care.

Follow established safety precautions when preforming tasks and using equipment and supplies.

Collaborates with the resident, members of the healthcare team, and when appropriate, the resident(s) significant other(s) in the interest of the resident healthcare.

Accepts only those nursing assignments that are commensurate with ones own educational preparation, experience, knowledge and ability and obtains instructions and supervision as necessary when implementing nursing procedures or practices.

Notify nursing staff regarding any updates or new requirements as needed from NACS (Nurse Assistant Certification Section) or the State Board of Nursing for licensed staff.

Develop positive relationship with government regulators, families, area healthcare comm nity, school of nursing and other allied health programs, and the community at large on behalf of the facility.

Assure that established infection control and standard precaution practices are maintained when providing care.

Follow established safety precautions when preforming tasks and using equipment and supplies.

Participates as a member of Safety Committee to identify training needs of staff if required by the facility.

Member of facility QAPI committee.

Responsible for identifying training needs that are identified during QAPI committee meetings.

Participates in Clinical Start-Up and Department Head Stand Up Meetings.

Communicates and interacts effectively and tactfully with residents, visitors, families, peers and supervisors.

Attend and participate in departmental meetings and in-services.

Must answer and respond to call lights promptly and courteously when working in resident care areas.
