Description:

  • Assist department scheduler with scheduling of procedures, confirming receipt of correct orders, and receipt of correct authorizations as needed.

  • Verifies orders for Interventional Radiology procedures.

  • Confirms outpatient appointments reviewing appropriate preparation for procedure with patient and addressing any patient concerns prior to procedure.

  • Prepares patient charts for daily procedures.

  • Confirms patient identity in accordance with hospital policy.

  • Provides patient education prior to procedure.

  • Coordinates patient flow communicating with registration for outpatients and nursing units for inpatients to efficiently manage to daily schedule.

  • Communicates with physician, nurse practitioner, physician’s assistant to review daily cases and address any concerns.

  • Review pertinent laboratory values, imaging, other medical records and performs nursing assessment to assist providers in screening of patient pre-procedure and anticipate any special needs for the individual patient with regard to the procedure being performed.

  • Performs general nursing activities in accordance with local standard of care and hospital policy.

  • Proficiently establishes intravenous (IV) access including access of central venous catheters with subcutaneous port.

  • Participates in hand-off communication when transferring patient to and from the admitting & recovery area and the procedural room AND when transferring patient between nursing units and Interventional Radiology.

  • Monitors patient post-procedure and post moderate sedation verifying that patient meet appropriate requirements for discharge or transfer to an inpatient setting in accordance with physician orders.

  • Provides patient with verbal and written instructions regarding post-procedural care.

  • Documents all pertinent information in the patient’s permanent medical record.

* Verifies patient orders, proper procedure, patient identification, and assures appropriate consent(s) have been obtained before proceeding with any procedure.

* Possesses working knowledge of procedures performed including indications, technical accomplishment, and potential risks/complications.

* Monitors patients undergoing procedures with local anesthesia and/or moderate sedation appropriately, administers medications, contrast media, and accurately documents activities and patient’s response to interventions

  • Demonstrates proficiency in recognition of arrhythmias and appropriate interventions in accordance with advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), local standard of care, and hospital policy.

* Proficiently sets up and maintains pressure lines.

  • Demonstrates the ability to draw blood for activated clotting time (ACT) monitoring and demonstrates proficiency in performing point of care ACT testing. Demonstrates clinical competency with ACT monitoring, quality control techniques.

  • Demonstrates clinical competency with sheath removal and can verbally state the potential hazards associated with this procedure.

* Anticipates changes in patient condition based on knowledge of procedures and disease processes.

* Practices proper sterile technique and adheres to infection control guidelines.

  • Practices radiation safety according to principles of ALARA and Time, Distance, Shielding and maintains shielding equipment appropriately.
