Job Description:

  • Maintain and operate the Talos G2, Spirit and Glacios G2 TEMs. Keep records of all specimens processed including detailed account of all steps used in processing each specimen. Write project summaries at completion of project to be presented to the researchers. Interpret data as needed for researchers. Prepare written drafts of materials and methods, as needed, for researchers wishing to publish the results. Explore and improve on data collection workflows, data interpretation and delivery.

  • Prepare research samples including but not limited to cells, animal and plant tissue, bacteria and viruses for examination by transmission and scanning electron microscopy, using a wide range of technical procedures. Review literature as needed to modify or create protocols required for preparing samples. Conduct consultations, prepare project cost estimates and prepare statements of work (SOWs).

  • Train research investigators with proper use of transmission and scanning electron microscopes and ancillary equipment and use such equipment, as needed, for service work as required but some researchers. Cross train other core staff when required. Act as primary trainer for our new Glacios microscope and be responsible for trouble shooting and maintenance. Meet with investigators about experimental design and new cryo-TEM projects and collect data with or in the absence of the Scientific Director.

  • Perform ultramicrotomy with both glass and diamond knives. Make glass knives, when required and maintains diamond knives.

  • Open/Close and supervise the lab and OPS/non-exempt staff in the absence of the Lab Manager. Travel as needed to attend scientific meetings and to learn new techniques or utilize equipment not maintained by the EM Core.

  • Other Duties as assigned.

Expected Salary:

$51,000 - $54,000, commensurate with education and experience

Minimum Requirements:

MS required or 5 years science related, core specific advanced training and work experience and/or post-graduate coursework. Requires at least 3 years in core facility specific applications and at least 2 years of that in research-based technology. Work experience in multi-user core facility preferred. Core or technology specific licensure and/or certifications where applicable. Additionally yearly certificate and compliance training if required.

Preferred Qualifications:

The ICBR EM lab is a fee-for-service facility where customer service and project tracking are an integral part of daily activities. Must have good record keeping skills and communicate effectively with customers and other laboratory staff. A comprehensive knowledge and ability to perform principles and techniques used in electron microscopic study of biological specimens, to including specimen preparation, ultramicrotomy, operation of transmission and scanning electron microscopes, and the recording of images. Should have a basic knowledge of cell and tissue ultrastructure. Ability to work independently is essential. Also important to be a team player. Trains others in techniques and instrumentation. Desire to learn advanced techniques and new methodologies.
