Job Information
Johns Hopkins University Postdoctoral Fellow (PREP0002953) in Gaithersburg, Maryland
PREP Research Associate
This position is part of the National Institute of Standards (NIST) Professional Research Experience (PREP) program. NIST recognizes that its research staff may wish to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest, thus requires that such institutions must be the recipient of a PREP award. The PREP program requires staff from a wide range of backgrounds to work on scientific research in many areas. Employees in this position will perform technical work that underpins the scientific research of the collaboration.
Project Plan: NIST has recently funded a new IMS program for Doppler thermometry. In this program, electro-optic frequency combs are employed to rapidly record the Doppler width of atomic transitions in microfabricated vapor cells. This should provide a deployable platform for primary thermometry while dramatically reduced the existing arduous calibration chain associated with thermometry calibrations.
The work will entail:
Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
Develop and apply optical frequency comb methods to optical sensors
These sensors will include both atomic vapors as well as optomechanical sensors
Processing the resulting interferograms to produce spectra
Analyzing the resulting spectra
§ Presenting results at internal meetings, and occasional meetings with external stakeholders.
§ Preparing manuscripts for publication in archival journals
§ Ensuring that results, protocols, software, and documentation have been archived or otherwise transmitted to the larger organization.
§ A PhD in physics, chemistry, or a related field
§ 3 years of relevant experience.
§ Familiarity with optics, fiber optic components, and spectroscopy
§ Ability to process and analyze data in Python or MATLAB
§ Strong oral and written communication skills.
Salary: $80,000-$85,000 a year
