JOB SUMMARY:

The Teacher Assistant will support the Teachers in shaping the lives of young children during their formative years. The primary responsibilities include developing meaningful relationships, encouraging discovery, cultivating a love of learning and promoting the development of children’s’ social-emotional skills.This is a 48 week position.

SALARY INFORMATION:

In compliance with New York’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary for this position is $48,000. Adelphi University considers factors such as departmental budgets, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

REPORTS TO:Director of the Early Learning Center

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

  • Supports the mission of the Adelphi University Alice Brown Early Learning Center.

  • Responsible for the classroom in the Teachers absence.

  • Supports the Teachers in training new Student Workers.

  • Learn and display knowledge of the theories of child growth and development and early childhood education.

  • Promote and support children’s social, emotional, cognitive, language and physical development.

  • Help organize and maintain a safe, healthy and non-punitive environment, in accordance with the Center’s philosophy.

  • Supervise the safety of children at all times indoors and outdoors.

  • Support children during arrival and departure from the program.

  • Assist children with toileting/handwashing/mealtimes.

  • Assist Teachers in recording, documenting and organizing children’s work and progress.

  • Understand and implement Child Day Care Regulations as administered by the Office of Children and Family Services.

  • Engage in meaningful on-going professional development opportunities; including trainings required by the NYS Office of Children and Family Services, and Adelphi University.

  • Maintain an orderly, sanitary classroom environment.

  • Support with classrooms chores.

  • Perform other job related duties as needed by the program.

    REQUIREMENTS: (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

  • Display proficiency in supervising children in a group and use transition techniques to move children through the daily routine.

  • Demonstrate the ability to take initiative and act cooperatively in meeting children’s needs.

  • Understanding of Child Development.

  • Ability to interact in a supportive and positive manner with a diverse student body.

  • Receptive to learning and adhering to ELC’s philosophies.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possess the ability to lift 50 lbs. or more.

  • Ability to bend, stoop and move freely.

    EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum of an associate’s degree in Early Childhood Education or a CDA credential is required.

  • Experience working with children age 18 months through 5 years is required.
