Description of Work

  • This position will function as a Transportation Worker IV within the Halifax County Bridge Maintenance Unit.

  • In this position your work will be related to the maintenance repair and construction of State-owned fixed bridges, culverts and pipes within Division 4.

  • In this position your work will be technical in nature and labor intensive.

  • You will be required to work in diverse working environments in all types of weather conditions. The recommended applicant will work in and around heavy traffic, near heavy equipment and with power tools. The recommended applicant must be able to work in a close team environment or independently, as needed.

  • In this position you must be able to carry and lift up to 100 lbs. occasionally and 50 lbs. frequently.

The recommended applicant could possibly be exposed to briars, poisonous plants, spiders and snakes when working around or under bridges. When traffic volumes dictate, the recommended applicant may be required to work at night or on weekends.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Experience in rigging loads for crane/lifting operations.

  • Knowledge of Advanced Work Zone Safety & NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices.

  • Experience in the maintenance and installation of erosion control devices

  • Ability to be the Lead Worker on a Bridge Crew without supervision

  • Experience in operating at least 1 of the following pieces of Bridge Category "D" equipment: Lattice Crane, Rubber Tire Excavator, Track Excavator, Tugboat.

Additional Expectations:

This level will serve as a Senior Lead Worker. Work requires advanced level skills in a variety of functional areas including: equipment operation, pile driving, carpentry, concrete work, machine operation, contract inspect, repair of culverts, bridges, large pipe, bulkheads and pile clusters, sandblasting/painting, demolition work, welding, structure inspect, trenching/shoring, lead paint removal, steel fabrication and steel beam repair, installation and maintenance of erosion control. Must be willing to attend training and continuing education classes to keep up to date on all state/federal regulations and maintain certifications in all required areas (i.e.: traffic control and environmental stewardship).

Must operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License. Position will require bending and walking on uneven terrain. May be required to work during non-traditional work hours, including nights, weekends, holidays and times of emergency.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
