Air Force Materiel Command Boiler Plant Operator Leader- DIRECT HIRE AUTHORITY in Hanscom AFB, Massachusetts

The primary purpose of this position is to lead three or more workers to accomplish trades and/or labor work on a substantially full time and continuing basis. Leader is responsible to both perform the work assigned by a supervisor and ensures that subordinates completed assigned work consistent with trades and labor standards Responsibilities 1. Leads a team of trades and/or labor workers. On a regular and recurring basis, utilizes trades and/or labor knowledge and skill to lead a team of three or more workers in performance of various related work. Maintains current knowledge and answers questions from other workers on procedures, policies, written instructions and directives. 2. Performs work. Performs nonsupervisory trades and/or labor work that is usually of the same kind and level as members of the work crew led. Performs the entire spectrum of trades/and or labor task appropriate for the occupations and grade of the team for which they are assigned working leader. 3. Starts, operates, adjusts, and stops multiple fuel power boilers fueled by fossil fuel and natural gas or a combination of these fuels, steam driven turbines, pumps, auxiliary pollution control and other equipment in high pressure steam central boiler plant. Operates and controls all equipment for maximum efficient operation and to meet the demand requirements for high pressure steam 4. Starts, operates, adjusts, and stops multiple fuel high tonnage chillers fueled by electricity, natural gas, and steam, or a combination of these fuels, cooling towers, turbines, pumps, auxiliary pollution control and other equipment to provide chilled water for cooling and process functions. Operates and controls all equipment for maximum efficient operation and to meet the demand requirements for chilled water. 5. Performs various operational repairs and preventive maintenance on boilers, chillers, cogeneration equipment, auxiliary, pollution control equipment. Cleans burners, oils and greases moving parts, packs valves and pumps, cleans oil strainers, and performs other routine operational maintenance. Locates and repairs limited electrical problems in oil burner controls, safety devices, and other equipment. Inspects and calibrates controls and gauges. 6. Utilizes safety practices, rules, regulations, and procedures to maintain a safe and clean work environment. Uses and assures proper fit of required safety equipment and clothing. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the Industrial Equipment Operation Family . Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, Operation of Boiler Plant Machinery, Technical Practices, Use of Measuring Instruments, Ability to Interpret instruction/ specifications, Dexterity and Safety. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
