Herkimer College is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time Staff Accountant - Payroll.
The Staff Accountant - Payroll is responsible for ensuring the accurate and timely processing of payroll and all related reporting for faculty, staff, and student employees. This role requires close attention to detail, a deep understanding of payroll regulations, and the ability to collaborate with various departments to maintain compliance with federal, state, and local tax laws and regulations as well as institutional policies.
Major responsibilities:
Prepare, process, and audit payroll for all employees, ensuring that pay is accurate, on time, and compliant with all applicable laws, collective bargaining agreements and institutional policies.
Maintain knowledge of federal, state, and local tax regulations to ensure proper tax withholding and reporting. Audit payroll servicer's tax forms and remittances, including but not limited to W-2s and quarterly tax filings.
Administer, track, and report all employee deductions for benefits, retirement plans, garnishments and other payroll-related deductions. Ensure proper documentation and compliance with regulatory requirements.
Timely and accurate preparation, audit and submission of compensation and service time reports to the college's three retirement systems.
Maintenance of employee records as they relate to compensation information. Preparation of salary calculations for collective bargaining agreements provisions and Board of Trustees resolutions.
Resolve discrepancies and respond to employee questions about compensation, taxes, and deductions. Provide excellent customer service while maintaining confidentiality.
Perform other duties as assigned to support the operations of the payroll and finance department.
Coordinate and/or Assist with:
Financial planning as it relates to personal services and benefits
Creation and maintenance of procedures and policies as they affect payroll
Assist with the maintenance of the payroll software and collaborate with the payroll servicer to resolve technical issues
Support internal and external audits by providing payroll-related documents and information as required.
Provide support for general Payroll and Human Resources needs.
Job Requirements:
Minimum Education and Experience:
Associates Degree in Accounting, Business, Human Resources or related field; Bachelor's Degree preferred
Solid understanding of accounting fundamentals and payroll best practices.
Experience with payroll processing software preferred
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel
Advanced mathematical skills, outstanding organizational ability and strong attention to detail
Highest integrity in handling confidential information
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Additional Information:
The salary range for this Management/Confidential position is $52,708 - $79,062.
