Jennie Stuart Medical Center, Inc. ASC First Assistant - Full Time Hopkinsville, Kentucky

Provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. Also provides other preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate proper patient care. Performs functions during the operation under the direction and supervision of the surgeon and in accordance with hospital policy and appropriate laws and regulations. Adheres to AORN standards; Human Resource, hospital-wide, and departmental policies and procedures. Continuously monitors the quality of care delivered to our patients to promote efficiency, appropriateness, availability, timeliness, effectiveness, continuity, safety, respect and caring.

Essential Functions

Obtains necessary equipment and supplies utilized for procedures performed at the ASC.

Demonstrates knowledge of and utilizes appropriate and approved vendors.

Maintains par inventory with primary focus on adequate volume and cost control.

Maintains awareness of schedule and responds to changes and fluctuations in order to meet the needs of the patients.

Accurately advises relief or others responsible for patient care regarding the patient status.

Checks for outdated items and insures rotation of stock to minimize waste.

Assures a smooth flow of communication

Maintains required records and logs for consignment items, implants, and biologicals and any other sterile processing requirements

Assists to maintain linen inventory

Assists with accurate perpetual inventory of supplies

Handles specimens appropriately

Provides a safe environment for patients and team members

Maintains infection control guidelines

Creates, maintains, and monitors a sterile field Coordinates with Clinical Director and vendor any evaluation of new products or services

Assembles supplies and equipment for specified procedures according to physicians’ preferences cards Inspects equipment for proper working condition

Follows principles of aseptic technique and AORN guidelines for Operating/Procedure room procedures

Reports observed or suspected breaks in sterile technique and takes action accordingly Correctly utilizes, cares for, cleans, sterilizes and packages instruments

Maintains adequate supplies in the OR for immediate access during procedures Stores and stocks supplies

Maintains and updates preference cards Documents patient care according to policy Assists physicians according to AORN and SGNA standards as appropriate to the procedure

Correctly operates sterilizers, ultrasonic washer and other equipment for processing items

Performs required biological/chemical monitoring tests and maintains logs according to established procedure

Performs accurate sponge, sharps, instrument counts Utilizes knowledge of anatomy and physiology for proper positioning and prepping

Accepts and labels medications onto the sterile field appropriately

Places orders in a timely manner

Participates with OR team members in the Time Out process Actively supports Joint Commission NPSGs

Completes department and hospital annual educational requirements as scheduled Cross trained to all OR specialty cases, endoscopy procedures, and sterile processing

Regularly attends dept. meetings Collects data for performance improvement activities

Required Skills

Minimum Education High school graduate or equivalent; graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program and graduate of a surgical assist program.

Required Licenses Registered Nurse

Certification from National Board of Surgical Technologists and Surgical Assisting preferred; Membership in professional organization is strongly encouraged. BLS is required

Required Experience

Minimum Work Experience One year experience in surgical assist environment preferred.
