Bridge and Lock Operator 1 $16.06 hourly

Bridge and Lock Operator 2 $17.18 hourly

The maximum monthly salary for the Bridge and Lock Operator 2 is $5,360. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

No experience or training is required.

Job Concepts

FUNCTION OF WORK:

To operate a power driven drawbridge and/or navigational lock, which includes performing preventive maintenance on related equipment.

LEVEL OF WORK:

Entry.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Direct supervision from a Highway Foreman 2, Parish Highway Maintenance Superintendent or equivalent supervisor; may also receive functional supervision from a Bridge and Lock Operator 2.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

None.

LOCATION OF WORK:

May be used by all state agencies.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:

Differs from Bridge and Lock Operator 2 by the absence of experienced-level duties.

Examples of Work

Receives on-the-job training in the operation of power-driven drawbridges and/or navigational locks.

Becomes familiar with Coast Guard and state regulations, rules and policies for waterway operations and related equipment.

Conducts visual inspections of bridge and/or navigational lock to ensure safe operation.

Prepares logs by documenting bridge/lock openings and closings in response to marine vessel signals.

Uses the marine radio to communicate with vessel pilots.

Reports mechanical or electrical problems to appropriate personnel so that corrective action can be taken.

Lubricates operating machinery.

Checks fluid levels and changes oil in emergency generators.

Assists in the collection of information to report collisions and damage incidents.

90% Operates power-driven drawbridge(s), ensuring the safe operation consistent with applicable Coast Guard regulations and DOTD policies. Examples of bridges operated are Electrical Vertical Lift, Hydraulic or Electrical Bascule, Hydraulic or Electrical Double Bascule, Hydraulic or Electrical Swing, and Pontoon. Trains lower-level Bridge and Lock Operators in the operation of the bridge (s) and in all other related duties. Prepares bridge logs and documents bridge openings and closings in response to marine vessel signals. Uses the marine radio to communicate with vessel operators. Conducts visual inspection of bridge(s) to ensure safe operation. Reports mechanical or electrical problems to appropriate personnel and/or takes necessary corrective action.

5% Lubricates operating machinery. Checks fluid and performs routine maintenance on the emergency generators to ensure proper operation. Collects information and prepares reports to document marine and vehicular collisions and damages. Cleans the interior of the bridge house; maintains grounds area surrounding the bridge; cleans the roadway approaches and bridge deck of debris.

5% May be required to perform other duties as necessary including, but not limited to emergency/disaster support activities
