Carpenter Master - $21.05 hourly

No Civil Service test score is required to be considered for this vacancy.

A valid Louisiana Class “D” Chauffeur’s License is required at time of appointment.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

One year of the required experience for the following minimum qualifications must have been on-the-job experience:

Three years of experience or training in the carpentry trade.

Job Concepts

Function of Work:

To perform complex and detailed carpentry work related to buildings, structures, furniture, cabinets and other wooden items that require a high degree of precision and/or perform leadworker duties for a crew of less than three subordinates.

Level of Work:

Advanced.

Supervision Received:

Broad review from a Carpenter Foreman or other higher level maintenance personnel.

Supervision Exercised:

May serve as leadworker over assigned craftsmen as the need occurs.

Location of Work:

May be used by all state agencies.

Job Distinctions:

Differs from Carpenter by responsibility for overseeing the work of subordinate craftsmen and performing the most complex carpentry duties.

Differs from Carpenter Foreman by lack of direct supervisory responsibility over assigned trades personnel.

Examples of Work

Repairs all types of furniture and wooden items.

Builds high quality bookcases, tables, lockers, cabinets, museum cases and fixtures.

Sands, finishes, refinishes, varnishes and stains furniture and other finished articles of wood.

Measures and precisely cuts a variety of artificial mate rails such as plastic, particle-board, formica, etc.

Canes and upholsters furniture.

Makes knives to produce special moldings and operates a planer, shaper, jointer, work lathe, drill press, mortising, boring, tenoning machines, jig saws, rip saws and cut-off saws.

Installs and fits fine trim work around lights, electrical fixtures, doors, windows and other outlets.

Estimates time and material for carpentry projects.

Inspects and approves work of contractual employee's.

Lays out, surveys and constructs all manner of detailed carpentry projects from shop drawings or blueprints.

Installs and repairs locks.

Finishes high grade carpentry projects.

Mortises doors and other construction related detailed work.

Lays out and installs floor tile including resilient tile.

Estimates supplies needed for completion of specified projects.

Provides guidance for subordinate Carpenters and trades personnel as needed.

Keeps records as required by supervisory personnel.

Oversees apprentice training.

Performs other duties as needed to insure the smooth flow of work within the job unit.

JOB DUTIES

45% Responsible for planning and estimating all materials needed for repairs and making alterations to the DOTD Buildings and other structures in the 02/Houma Sub-Districtwide Parishes which include two Project Engineer Offices (Thibodaux and Houma), Raceland Maintenance Unit’s Office and surrounding buildings, Terrebonne Maintenance Unit’s Office and surrounding buildings which includes the Mobile Equipment Repair Shop and Gas Station, the Sub-District Maintenance Administration Office in Houma and twenty-six (26) Bridges/Tunnel Operator Houses with twenty-nine(29) structures in (3 bridge sites have electric generator buildings separate from the Operator Houses). Estimates time and materials required for all Carpentry projects.

20% Performs complex detailed repairs and remodeling on all DOTD Buildings & Other Structures in the Sub-District, which include:

Removing and installing multiple types of flooring (ceramic, laminate, linoleum, hardwood and carpet).

Removing and installing wall insulation, wall coverings (hardwood, plywood, sheet rock), doors and hanging ceilings.

Performing basic electrical work such as installing air conditioners in bridge houses.

Forming and pouring concrete for slabs and sidewalks.

Performing repair work on metal buildings.

Estimating and requisitioning materials needed for various carpentry and plumbing projects.

15% Builds, finishes, and installs wood cabinets, desks, and shelving in assigned DOTD Buildings and other structures.

15% Performs basic plumbing installation (waterlines, toilets, and sinks) and plumbing repairs in all assigned DOTD facilities.

5% May be required to perform other duties as necessary including but not limited to emergencies.
