Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Nuclear Safety Inspector to work in our Environment, Safety, Health and Quality department. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Willow Creek Building, Idaho Falls, Idaho with every other Friday off.

You will report to the Manager of Nuclear Assurance. You will Implement independent risk-informed, performance-based oversight model in all disciplines that impact safe nuclear operations (i.e., Engineering, Maintenance, Operations, Radiological Controls and Emergency Planning).

Responsibilities Include:

  • Provide oversight of and conduct inspections of INL Nuclear Safety Operations observing the INL Integrated Oversight Process. As part of inspections, review safety analysis reports (SARs), technical safety requirements (TSRs), technical specifications/standards (specifically 10CFR830--nuclear safety regulations), unreviewed safety question (USQ) screenings and evaluations, and other safety basis documents that support DOE regulations.

  • Inspection efforts include sampling of facility hazard categorizations for conformance to applicable Department of Energy (DOE) regulations and inspections of the adequacy of line organization documentation that supports nuclear safety operations.

  • Review operating event timelines and causal evaluations developed by the line organizations responsible for the safe conduct of nuclear operations to ensure that the actual causes of operating events are identified and that actions to prevent recurrence are appropriate to the causes and implemented.

  • Identify and develop performance trends through the use of line organization's corrective action documentation, event reports, incident reports, and other applicable source documents.

  • Develop metrics to assess nuclear safety performance, inspection procedures for conducting nuclear safety inspections, and assessments, and support for preparation of nuclear safety standards.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Manager of Office of Nuclear Assurance (ONA) to develop a functional foundation for all ONA activities.

  • Advise and assist Laboratory Director, Laboratory Deputy Directors, and INL senior management on laboratory and national issues that pertain to Nuclear Safety Operations. Develop strategic relationships with Department of Energy (DOE)-ID, DOEHQ, Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO), other national laboratories/peer groups, other nuclear agencies, senior management, and facility operations.

  • Develop effective interfaces with facility operations, supporting organizations, and DOE field office/headquarters personnel.

  • May organize, chair, or present at national nuclear safety meetings. Develop and implement comprehensive nuclear safety regulatory controls, procedures, and processes.

  • May implement the nuclear safety controls to include active participation in strategy development for the Office of Nuclear Assurance (ONA) to establish the baseline for scope, cost, and schedule for the ONA.

  • Mentor junior staff and other employees.

  • Bachelor of Science degree in related field and 9 years of experience or an Masters of Science Degree and 6 years of experience or an Associates Degree in a STEM field with 11 years relevant experience.

  • Experience may include a regulatory affairs, nuclear operations, nuclear regulatory requirements, regulator oversight, enforcement processes, including Safety and Security DOE Regulations.

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.

  • The pay range for this position is Level 4 ($91,008 - $186,588). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.

  • TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
