Overview

The Safety Manager, NYC Market, facilitates the execution of the NYC Market safety strategy by developing and implementing programs that support the IWS safety culture and ensures all NYC Commercial Waste Zone safety and training requirements are implemented and followed. Responsibilities include directing the NYC Market Safety team, training employees, monitoring, and ensuring safety policies and procedures are implemented and enforced. This position will work closely with the NYC Market area team to drive safety and transportation compliance.

Responsibilities

Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Work with HR and Operations to Schedule training classes held for new hires, job/skill set changes and existing employee training needs and requirements.

  • Provides support regarding classroom and behind the wheel instruction according to all aspects of vehicle operation, including defensive driving, market area familiarization, loading & uploading and securement, proper documentation, use of on-board equipment, accident, and emergency procedures.

  • Ensure proper documentation of training is being obtained and maintained.

  • Oversight of the current SAJO, NJ training facility and maintaining skilled course and road test requirements.

  • Support, schedule, and assign work to NYC Market Safety Supervisors to meet training needs including safety related items including on route observations including in cab ride-a-longs, perform follow up OJT new hire release calls, site inspections, monthly training participation and presentation, safety lanes and emergency evacuation drills.

  • Verification of current training programs being followed as per outlined.

  • Works with corporate safety to implement training updates and safety related content.

  • Develop, implement, and maintain Safety policies and procedures in alignment with local, state, and federal regulations as well as industry best practices.

  • Conduct regular audits and inspections to identify potential hazards and areas for improvement and develop and implement corrective actions as needed.

  • Provide leadership and guidance to Operations teams to promote a strong culture of safety, including training programs, safety meetings, and communication initiatives.

  • Ensure all NYC Market Safety programs and records comply with Commercial Waste Zone requirements.

  • Develop a schedule of training for all NYC Market Employees to meet yearly training requirements for Commercial Waste Zones.

  • Manage incident and accident investigations, including root cause analysis and the development of preventative measures and corrective actions to mitigate future risks.

  • Work with operations to schedule and conduct incident reviews as needed and report back to management.

  • Work with corporate safety to develop training content on areas of importance to NYC Market.

  • Conduct SAMSARA coaching with direct reports, managers, supervisors, and employees.

  • Develop and distribute weekly safety briefings to depots and facilities.

  • Develop a system to track training and monitor retraining and updates as needed.

  • Conduct walkthroughs and formal audits to evaluate and identify potential hazards and training priorities at facilities.

  • Perform periodic worker evaluations to assess and ensure effectiveness of the training program.

  • Mentor and support new and existing route supervisors so they may coach their employees on the company expectations and safety culture.

Qualifications

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in Safety management preferably in the transportation industry.

  • Strong knowledge of Safety regulations and standards, including DOT and OSHA, and relevant industry-specific requirements.

  • Experience creating and training DOT drivers.

  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing Safety programs, policies, and procedures.

  • Proven leadership abilities, including the ability to motivate and inspire teams to achieve Safety goals and objectives.

  • Experience working with and knowledge of federal, state, and local government safety regulations.

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred.

  • CDL preferred.

Salary Range Minimum

USD $115,000.00/Yr.

Salary Range Maximum

USD $125,000.00/Yr.
