The Seattle Times Warehouse Associate / Forklift Operator (Temporary) in Kent, Washington
The Seattle Times, a Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper, is looking for a dynamic Warehouse Associate (Temporary) to join our Production team. In this role, you will support our evening and early morning shipping and receiving operations while moving inventory and other products using a forklift and clamp truck. Main duties include preparing shipments, moving material and product, and performing manual labor while completing other typical warehouse duties. You should be comfortable performing basic calculations to ensure accuracy and willing to drive short distances (on occasion).
Responsibilities
Must be able to be certified on a standard sit down forklift and clamp truck (electric).
Operate a clamp truck to lift, transport, and precisely position large paper rolls onto stacks up to 20ft high weighing up to 3000lbs.
Perform daily pre-shift inspections of the forklift and clamp truck to ensure proper functionality and safety.
Follow established safety procedures and operating equipment in a safe manner.
Operate and maintain warehouse equipment, including a forklift, clamp truck, electric pallet jack, manual pallet jack, and riding dolly.
Moving rolls of paper between the storage area and the press as well as unloading shipment of paper rolls upon arrival.
Load and unload product into shipping trucks and vans as well as securing the load within the vehicle.
Staging empty recycle containers and placing full containers in semi-trailers.
Weighing and completing paperwork for mailings, basic inventory, and daily logs.
Prepare and complete orders for delivery and pick up while ensuring deliveries are on schedule.
Staging empty pallets for production crews while preparing product pallets for shipping with caps and shrink wrap.
Maintaining a clean and safe work area throughout the warehouse while emptying garbage dumpsters into large roll off containers when necessary.
Occasionally driving a 26-foot box truck to the production warehouse and local post office.
Other relevant projects and duties as assigned by a manager.
Schedule: This position requires flexible work hours depending on scheduling needs. Works hours for this role are Sunday - Tuesday from 3:30pm to 2:00am and Saturdays from 7:00am to 5:30pm. Please note that the training period for this role will be Tuesday - Friday 3:30pm to 2:00am.
Qualifications
Experience:
At least one year of previous warehouse/industrial experience preferred.
Experience operating a sit down forklift, clamp truck and electric pallet jack is preferred.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Certifications & Licenses:
Must be willing to maintain a current forklift certification. Forklift certification will be done onsite.
Must have a valid, unexpired driver’s license.
Must have the ability read, write and understand English.
Comfortable performing basic arithmetic including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division accurately.
Must be able to understand and follow safety guidelines in multiple formats including verbal, written, or diagrams.
Should have a history of reliable attendance.
Physical Demands

Must be able to bend, stoop, crawl, and use hands and arms for the purpose of lifting, stacking, sorting, pushing, and pulling.
Must be able to lift up to 20lbs frequently, 50lbs occasionally, and up to 100lbs occasionally.
Must be able to move carts up to 1200lbs and pallets up to 2000lbs with mechanical assistance.
Must be able to see up close, at a distance, have good peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
Must have strong hand-eye coordination.
Must have excellent spatial awareness.
Work Environment: The work environment described here are representative of the elements the employee will be exposed to, dust, heat, cold, loud noise, airborne particles, outside weather conditions and moving mechanical parts.
Compensation: The full salary range for this position is $21.35 to $24.17 per hour. New hires currently start at $21.35 per hour.
