Argonne National Laboratory Postdoctoral Appointee - High Pressure Research in Lemont, Illinois

The High Pressure Collaborative Access Team (HPCAT) seeks a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to work on development of novel pressure platforms and advanced x-ray capabilities with the recently upgraded Advanced Photon Source (APS) and HPCAT.

With the APS Upgrade project nearing completion, HPCAT has made significant investments in upgrading key infrastructure to advance x-ray platforms for studying matter under extreme conditions. The selected postdoc will:

  • Have ample opportunities for career growth and cutting-edge scientific research while playing a critical role in expanding HPCAT’s efforts.

  • Work on testing, developing, and advancing novel experimental pressure platforms such as the d-DAC, roto-DAC, or MDAC, as well as developing new capabilities to extend the pressure, temperature, and strain rate regimes.

  • Be involved in a concurrent effort dedicated to implementing the pressure platforms and working with HPCAT staff to develop advanced x-ray diagnostics in x-ray diffraction, imaging, and time-resolved measurements.

Position Requirements

  • This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Geoscience, and Engineering, or a related field at the PhD level with zero to five years of employment experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate (both written and verbal) and effectively collaborate with other team members

  • Ability to work on experiments independently, utilize (and develop as needed) data analysis tools, and summarize results in peer reviewed publications.

  • Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • Experience in experimental high-pressure platforms (such as diamond anvil cell, large volume press, etc.) and/or application of x-ray diagnostics for study of material properties.

  • Other research disciplines may also be considered, but it is imperative that the candidate discuss in the application how his/her research background can contribute to overall HPCAT in advancing studies of matter at extreme pressure, temperature, and complex loading (higher strain rate, shear, etc.).

In addition to your CV, please also submit a 1 to 2-page short summary of relevant experience and scientific ideas.
