Argonne National Laboratory Sustainability Analyst in Lemont, Illinois

The Applied Materials Division (AMD) at Argonne National Laboratory conducts applied research to develop sustainable innovative technologies to improve the efficiency of resource and energy utilization; to minimize our dependence on imported energy; and to enhance our national security. Within this division exists a group that performs cost and environmental impact analysis to help with process optimization and scale up.

A Staff Appointment is now open for a candidate with experience in technoeconomic analysis (TEA), life cycle analysis (LCA) and testing of lithium-ion batteries and/or recycling technologies. The candidate should have a good understanding of recycling technologies, sources and production technologies of materials, and/or 2nd life applications of various products such as batteries, fuel cells, other critical materials bearing products, as well as plastics, metals. An understanding of process scale-up and chemical plant design is of special importance for the 2nd life applications of various recycling and upcycling of new technologies. The candidate should be familiar with databases and analytical models relevant to TEA and LCA and have a good knowledge of current and future energy storage technologies. - Experience in a laboratory setting is a plus, as close collaboration and hands-on optimization of experimental set-ups at bench- or pilot-scale might be advantageous in some projects. The successful candidate will 1) collect data pertaining to recycling and production from open literature and databases, and experimental work conducted at lab-to pilot- and field-scale as well as through communications with industry, government agencies, and other collaborators; 2) analyze collected data with Argonne’s IMPACT and EverGreen models to estimate associated cost and environmental impacts; 3) write reports and journal articles to document research findings; 4) Expand, update, and maintain the EverGreen and IMPACT models; and 5) provide analytical support to Argonne’s ReCell Center.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s and 5+ years, Master’s and 3+ years, or Doctorate and 0 years in chemical engineering, environmental engineering, industrial engineering, or similar degree.

  • Experience with data collection, processing, analysis, and presentation.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel and good computer programming skills.

  • Handson lab experience in testing of lithium-ion batteries and/or recycling technologies.

  • Knowledge of techno-economic analysis and life cycle analysis.

  • Experience working with Argonne’s EverGreen models, IMPACT model.

  • Understanding of lithium-ion batteries, their supply chain and recycling processes.

  • Ability to work well within a team of experts in various areas of expertise.

  • Skilled in oral and written communications with peers, colleagues, and collaborators.

  • Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

  • Ability to make our laboratory a safe, welcoming, inclusive, and accessible environment where all can thrive.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Python programming and/or Matlab/Simulink for data analysis.
