Overview The Office of University and Exploratory Advising is seeking an academic advisor to support undecided students in developing academic plans and class schedules, as well as attending to student academic inquiries, assisting in the resolution of individual academic problems, and engaging in proactive advising programs. Using the Appreciative Advising framework, the incumbent will be trained to deliver advising programming that connects students' strengths, interests, goals, and values with their academic and career objectives.

Responsibilities Advising (90%)

  • Provides accurate information related to curriculum, major declaration/prerequisite requirements, and university policies and procedures by meeting in person, by phone, through video conference and through email.
  • Encourages and guides students as they define and develop realistic goals.
  • Provides information and strategies to utilize available campus resources and services.
  • Assists students in making responsible and informed decisions impacting academic progress.
  • Creates semester-by-semester plans in DegreeWorks and monitors student progress toward their declared major.
  • Assists students to understand the purpose of higher education and the impact on life goals.
  • Discusses the benefits of building a learning community, network, and support system among peers, professors, and mentors.
  • Makes appropriate referrals to other University and non-university resources.
  • Maintains records and documentation of advising interactions and maintain confidentiality.
  • Seeks opportunities to gain experience working and collaborating in diverse, multicultural, and inclusive settings with a willingness to change/adapt for continual improvement.
  • Functions and communicates effectively and respectfully within the context of varying beliefs, behaviors, orientations, identities, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Manages student caseload, responsible for implementing interventions designed to help students persist and reach their major declaration and completion goals.
  • Engages in proactive advising interventions to engage students and monitor student progress toward persisting to the next semester.

Service (10%)

  • Serves on committees related to academic advising.
  • Engages in professional development experiences to improve advising practices.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Demonstrated ability to be sensitive to and understand the needs of a diverse student population.
  • Ability to communicate well verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
  • Ability to work on one's own with little supervision as well as work in a team setting.
  • An understanding of developmental educational processes.
  • An attitude of service.
