This is a key role within our team, and we would typically require around 5 or more years’ relevant experience.
You will support the delivery of projects on national/international chemicals policy, for clients such as international organisations (e.g. OECD, United Nations); EU institutions and agencies (European Commission, European Chemicals Agency, European Environment Agency); national governments (Canada, EU Member States, the UK, etc.); the private sector.
Alongside project delivery we are seeking someone who can write winning proposals, manage individual projects, contribute toward business development and aid the development of more junior colleagues.
You will work in multi-disciplinary teams, contributing to policy development, implementation and evaluation on chemicals risk management; cost-benefit analysis; model development; information/ data collection and analysis; stakeholder consultation; report writing and verbal presentation.
We expect you to understand the processes for development of public policy (e.g. EU/UK REACH, POPs Regulation, etc.) and the methods for assessing the impacts of government action, including the interaction between the public and private sectors, the scope for government intervention and the operation of regulated markets
YOUR TEAM
WSP’s environmental policy and economics team is at the forefront of providing policy, technical and economic advice on the development and implementation of environmental policy and business response to policy.
Our reputation for robust and impartial analysis means our projects directly influence the development and improvement of environmental policies in the UK, EU and beyond, addressing some of the most challenging issues we face.
Our recent work covers REACH (e.g. the impact assessment for the revision of REACH, studies on introducing a mixture assessment factor and the essential use concept); POPs Regulation; the transition to safe and sustainable chemicals; impacts from chemicals on human health and the environment; transparency across the supply chain; socio-economic analysis for chemical substances; and assessing risk management options for PFAS.
Postgraduate qualification in environmental science / technology, chemistry, economics, engineering, policy or similar.
A demonstrable interest in developing a career in chemicals policy.
Knowledge of chemicals policies and the affected sectors. For example:
EU and/or UK chemicals policies and strategies, e.g. REACH, CLP, POPs, the Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability, the Zero Pollution Action Plan, etc.
Compliance with EU and/or UK chemicals policies and strategies, from within the private sector.
Demonstrable research skills / experience. This may be via collection and analysis of data, summarising and critically evaluating literature, stakeholder interviewing, for example.
Understanding of analytical techniques such as: survey design and execution; market analysis; socio-economic analysis; regulatory impact assessment. Familiarity with national and international sources of government and business statistics would be desirable.
Demonstrable experience in some of the following: economic and policy analysis, development and implementation; evaluation of technical / policy measures to address environmental problems; data collection, validation and analysis; and stakeholder consultation.
Strong mathematical skills, covering quantitative analysis, data management, statistical modelling.
Excellent communication skills and ability to write clear and concise reports in English.
Professional experience of environmental or policy analysis. This may be within a consultancy, government, research agency/think tank, NGO or private sector / industry organisation or relevant placement.
Project management experience
- Demonstrable experience of project management (scoping, planning, monitoring and executing project methodologies; client and subcontractor communication and management; organisation of staff resources and coordination of teams; excellent organisation, ability to plan ahead of deadlines; providing guidance and support to junior members of staff).
Commercial experience
- Demonstrable commercial experience, including capability to write proposals, generate new business leads and identify opportunities for new services; develop new and existing client relationships; and set, manage and monitor budgets, including financial reporting.
