OVERVIEW OF THE DEPARTMENT/SECTION

The Mid-Market (‘MM’) Direct Lending team is responsible for the origination and execution of MM LBOs with financial sponsors, working alongside coverage colleagues and supported by the Leveraged Finance platform

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

  • Lead the Mid-Market Origination and Execution effort within the Leveraged Finance Group and contribute to MUFG’s strategy in EMEA.

  • Onboard and monetise attractive assets in the UK and NL mid-market space.

  • Partner with PE Sponsor Coverage to identify and access the appropriate client base in MM lending to provide most opportunity to MUFG in a competitive market.

  • Provide strategic oversight of the fledgling initiative and consider and implement appropriate growth strategies.

  • Work collaboratively with Leverage Finance and Middle Market Tech teams in EMEA and globally when originating and executing transactions to deliver a high-quality client experience.

  • Work together with PE Sponsor Coverage and other products areas within the bank to assist in executing the broader FI strategy, to maximise cross sell amongst Sponsor clients and their portfolio companies.

  • Contribute to the financial success of the MM Direct Lending team and wider FI Group.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Specifically, you will be accountable and responsible for taking appropriate action with respect to the MMDL team within the FI Coverage Department, including:

Strategy:

  • In conjunction with the Head of Private Equity Sponsor Coverage and Mid-Market Direct Lending, deliver the FI strategy and business objectives for the EMEA region.

  • Be accountable for delivering initially agreed MMDL strategy and for presenting and effecting agreed mandate changes.

  • Actively contribute to for the Team’s strategic and financial contribution to MUFG’s Medium Term Business Plan (MTBP).

  • Be responsible for the MMDL Team working closely with other EMEA and global FI coverage teams to ensure an aligned approach across all Sponsor facing business.

Financials:

  • Accountable for the planning, management and achievement of financial targets for the MMDL business in EMEA, including budgeting, monitoring and reporting the results in a timely manner.

  • Be accountable for incremental increases in revenues from MM verticals of Sponsors

  • Partner with GCIB (Global Corporate & Investment Banking) product teams, including inter alia, Leveraged Finance, Securitised Products & Supply Chain Finance, Global Markets, Debt Capital Markets, Equity Capital Markets and Structured DCM and Syndicate, FX Sales, etc.to enhance delivery of existing products and the development of new products working in tandem with product experts to drive incremental increases in revenue.

  • Be responsible for leveraging the existing GCIB balance sheet exposure to increase fee based business.

Client:

  • Work with PE Sponsor Coverage to identify target clients for MMDL not currently serviced by the bank.

  • Utilise existing relationships to originate business for the bank across MMDL and other relevant products

  • Manage appropriate MIS (Salesforce, CHUB or other) to monitor client relationships across products and revenue streams.

  • Contribute to MUFG’s ESG agenda with the client base ensuring that ESG principles are fully embedded in client relationship strategies.

Leadership:

  • Be responsible for continuously demonstrating role model leadership behaviours in line with MUFG’s culture principles.

  • Participate within the wider leadership echelons of the FI Group

  • Be an active supporter of MUFG’s Inclusion & Diversity agenda in every aspect of the employee lifecycle.

Risk Management and Conduct:

  • Responsible for compliance with regulatory regimes applicable to EMEA’s Sponsor business.

  • Accountable for promoting a strong risk and compliance culture, with no material breaches of risk and compliance frameworks and processes.

  • Monitor and exercise good judgement relating to all credit/market risk decisions by maintaining open dialogue with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Be accountable for all credit/market risk in your business.

  • Be responsible for conducting business in line with internal policies and procedures as well as regulatory.

  • Oversee all aspects of portfolio monitoring pertaining to the MMDL portfolio.

People:

You will manage the following matters, appropriate for the team, including:

  • Authority for building (via recruitment, restructuring and internal development) a team of high-quality professionals that will achieve the objectives of the broader MUFG Group to leverage the strategic advantages;

  • Accountable for ensuring that all staff in your remit are fully trained and understand what is required of them in order to do their jobs effectively, including ensuring that job descriptions, objectives/personal development and performance reviews are provided for all staff at least once a year in accordance with HR requirements, continually monitoring their competency in order to meet the requirements of the relevant regulator’s training and competency regime, handling appropriately any grievance or disciplinary issues;

  • Accountable for ensuring that any responsibilities that you have delegated to other staff, including those in respect of regulatory obligations (where applicable), are appropriately apportioned and controlled.

  • Ensure that the staff in question have a clear understanding of these duties so as to ensure that the business and affairs of the function can be adequately monitored and controlled.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Functional / Technical Competencies:

Essential

  • Detailed understanding and demonstrable practical experience in sub investment grade cash flow modelling, structuring and documentation

  • Deep familiarity with leveraged debt capital market products and processes

  • Knowledge and profile within the UK/NL MM and financial advisor community

  • Demonstrable negotiation skills with internal partners and external clients.

  • Significant experience in negotiating essential

  • Origination and execution skills across MM product

  • Management, leadership and mentoring skills to manage the resources within the group to develop individuals from both a technical perspective and a career progression perspective.

  • Demonstrable existing relationships with the PE community and ability to develop new relationships

  • Excellent presentation skills (previous experience presenting at Board level and at external conferences)

  • Strong credit and risk management skills to appropriately limit risk to MUFG

  • Demonstrable cross selling skills to drive revenue opportunities across MUFG’s product suite, both at the portfolio company and sponsor level.

  • Strong project management and organisational skills

  • Sound understanding of internal banking systems and procedures

  • Appreciation of external banking regulation

  • Good IT knowledge and skills

  • Fluency in English, written and spoken

Education / Qualifications:

Essential

  • University degree, or equivalent experience in area of expertise

Preferred:

  • Relevant post degree qualification preferred (e.g. CFA, ACA, MBA)
