Job Summary and Qualifications
POSITION SUMMARY:
To assist nursing staff in the management of patient care through the transportation of patients between nursing departments and ancillary departments; support delivery of equipment and supplies between support departments and patient care areas, and assist in the management and distribution of centralized equipment.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the direct supervision of the Manager of Materials Management and the general supervision of the Dispatch/Scheduling Coordinator and within established Catholic Medical Center and department policies and procedures, the incumbent performs the following functions:
Processes requests from nursing units, testing departments and the dispatch/scheduling coordinator to transport patients via requested mode of transport and utilizing requested safety devices and/or personal protective gear as needed; confirms patient identity and destination department and assists unit staff as directed in the transfer of patient to/from bed manually or using specified transfer devices; transports patients to/from nursing and ancillary departments including Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, MRI, CT scan, Ultrasound, Special Procedures, Physical Therapy, Cardiology, Endoscopy, Surgery, PACU, Medical Surgical floors, EKG, EEG, Echo, Wound Care, Mom’s Place, and Emergency; performs transport of patients discharged from the hospital as required.
Observe patient during transport using Patient Transport knowledge and techniques and notifies accepting staff of changes or difficulties with move. Utilizes complete knowledge of portable O2 usage and connects patient to portable or wall O2 as directed by nursing staff.
Performs department dispatch function for incoming requests from nursing and ancillary departments and prioritizes outstanding workload via radios, telephone or pagers; provides requestor with estimated time required for completion of call and updates as needed; records all required call information including patient name, room and bed, destination, mode of transport, and special equipment. Records call times, calculates elapsed time and completes log sheet data summary functions. Logs all incoming requests for Courier or Shuttle calls and takes appropriate follow up action as needed to communicate with drivers or Supervisor. Answers radios and telephone in a professional manner and completes all requests received.
Processes requests to deliver equipment, supplies or documentation including wheelchairs, stretchers, pumps, scopes, x-rays, specimens, medications, records, and patient supplies or belongings to designated locations as scheduled or requested. Delivers blood products as requested using lab safety procedures.
Completes and maintains various department and hospital logs, forms, and other documentation as needed. Sorts, copies, and distributes department documentation as directed. Updates and maintains department computer files and reports as directed.
Manages and distributes centralized equipment as required including wheelchairs, stretchers, infusion pumps and specialized transport devices. Routinely and periodically cleans, inventories and deploys assigned department and centralized equipment and tags and removes from service all defective equipment as required.
Ensures confidentiality of employee, physician, and legal matters; respects and maintains patient rights and confidentiality at all times.
Maintains good communications and customer relations skills; establishes and maintains positive teamwork and working relationships with employees, physicians and the public.
Ensures clean linens are used for all transport equipment and follows all infection control guidelines and protocols.
Performs patient shuttle schedule functions as directed; completes data entry for appointments and works with associated reports.
Drives Courier or Patient Shuttle vehicles as directed to complete courier trips or pick up and deliver patients for hospital appointments in a backup role.
Exercises care in the operation and use of all equipment and reference materials. Maintains work area in a clean and organized manner.
Participates in appropriate role in drills and actual disaster and emergency situations.
Attends department meetings and participates in all required education.
Wears appropriate uniform and maintains neatness and good hygiene in accordance with department dress code policy.
Performs similar or related duties as required or directed.
What qualifications you will need:
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent desired.
Experience:
- No experience necessary; one year of health care or customer service experience preferred.
Licensure/Certification:
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record desired.
