Description:
Performs review of outpatient medical record documentation and assign appropriate ICD-10 diagnosis & procedure codes and CPT/HCPCS.
Under the general direction of the Coding Manager and/or Lead Coder, the Coding Specialist I is responsible for accurate coding of outpatient conditions and procedures working from the appropriate documentation in the health record of the patient. Analyzes physician/provider documentation contained in assigned Routine Outpatient (RO) health records (electronic, paper or hybrid) to determine the principal diagnosis, secondary diagnoses and any procedures. Utilizes encoder software applications, which includes all applicable online tools and references) in the assignment of ICD diagnosis and procedure codes.
Assigns appropriate code(s) by utilizing coding guidelines established by:
• The Centers for Medicare/Medicaid Services (CMS) ICD-CM Official Coding Guidelines for Coding and Reporting, ICD-PCS Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting
• American Hospital Association (AHA) Coding Clinic for International Classification of Diseases, Clinical Modification
• American Medical Association (AMA) CPT Assistant for CPT codes
Pay Range: $24.33 - $37.73 per hour
Actual compensation will fall within the range but may vary based on factors such as experience, qualifications, education, location, licensure, certification requirements, and comparisons to colleagues in similar roles.
