This position will function as an Advanced Level mechanic within the Marion Crane Equipment Shop in McDowell County. Position is responsible for the managing, diagnosis, repair and preventative maintenance of overhead crane, aerial devices, emergency generators and radio equipment. Position may assist with the maintenance and repair of fuel storage and delivery equipment and other equipment as assigned. Employee may perform mechanic work at various levels in support of Equipment Shops across Division 13 and perform other tasks as assigned associated with the operations of equipment shops. Work assignments vary in complexity depending on the type of mechanical and electrical and electronic system.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Qualified applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:
Experience in performing preventative maintenance on a minimum of two of the following; light, medium, heavy duty trucks and heavy equipment.
Experience in performing hydraulic system diagnostics, repairs, and rebuilds on a variety of equipment.
Experience in in troubleshooting complex electrical/electronic systems.
Experience in performing electrical/ electronic diagnostics and repair of complex wiring on two of the following; light, medium, heavy duty trucks and heavy equipment
Additional Expectations:
Knowledge and ability to perform a number of widely varying diverse assignments that require in-depth analysis and diagnostic work. Prefer experience in preventative maintenance and repair of overhead crane, aerial devices, emergency generators and radio equipment. Prefer experience in SAP. Knowledge of Preventive Maintenance, AC, Heating/Vent, Instruments and Gauges, Brakes, Steering, Suspension, Tires, Wheels/Rims, Hubs and Bearings, Axle Driven Rear, Clutch, Drive Shaft, Manual Trans, Auto Trans, Charging Sys, Cranking Sys, Ignition Sys, Lighting Sys, Air Intake, Cooling Sys, Exhaust, Fuel Sys, Power Plant, Horns/Alarms, Power Takeoff, Hydraulics, Body/Cargo, Lines and Pumps, Cab and Sheet Metal, Axles Ft and Rr, Frame, Electrical Access, Cargo Handling, Restraints, Lift Sys, Trailer and Frame, Compressor, Engine Aux, Valves and Safety Devices. Safety Toe Shoes are required within 30 days of employment. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate Class A CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions and have a Tanker (N) endorsement at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. A Release Form (ALCDRG-01) and Background Statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Employee is required to furnish a complete set of mechanic tools. Ability to demonstrate commitment to provide safe working environment by leading by example. Ability to follow appropriate post-emergency procedures. Ability to lead shop safety efforts and regularly communicate safety-related operational items. Ability to read and interpret Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) manuals and use diagnostic tools. Must have physical strength and dexterity sufficient to move relatively heavy objects.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three (3) years of experience in the area of assignment, or a sufficient year-for-year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualifications: May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.
