Meta Data Center Design Mechanical Engineer in Menlo Park, California

Summary:

Meta is seeking an Mechanical Engineer Design Lead experienced in the design and construction of Critical Facilities to become part of our data center design team. Our data centers are the foundation upon which our software operates. Building and operating reliable and efficient data centers is essential to support the growth of Meta. The data center design team collaborates with all key stakeholders to ensure engineering and design of our data centers incorporate considerations from micro-levels (servers and IT equipment design requirements) to macro-levels (mechanical cooling and power distribution options) to ensure maximum efficiency and reliability of our compute infrastructure. As an integral part of the Design team, this role will support design and construction administration as an Owner Representative leading Mechanical Engineering disciplines and subject matter expert, collaborating with multiple internal partner teams such as Engineering, Construction Management, Quality, Safety, and Operations, and external partners such as engineers of record, general contractors, and regulatory agencies to deliver data center capacity safely, on time, within budget, and high quality. This position is full-time requiring engagement with stakeholders and providing directional guidance aligned with the pace of dynamic fast-tracked construction.

Required Skills:

Data Center Design Mechanical Engineer Responsibilities:

  1. Lead projects through concept, schematic, design development, construction documents, construction administration and turn-over as technical domain lead for the Mechanical Engineering discipline on new builds (greenfield) leased facility and retrofits projects.

  2. Collaborate with internal cross-functional partners and stakeholders, such as Engineering, Construction, Operations and external partners such as engineer of record (EoR), contractors, and regulatory agencies in resolving issues and leading risk mitigation strategies ensuring on-time and budget delivery of capacity with focus on safety, quality, operability and sustainability.

  3. Prepare and issue Request for Proposals (RFP), analyze and make award recommendations, manage and administer project/program level contracts, review/approve change cost proposals, value engineering proposals, invoices, shop drawings, submittals, requests for information, reports/audits/studies and other design related deliverables

  4. Hold EoR teams accountable on deliverables and performance by providing actionable feedback, including from other stakeholders such as Delivery and by participating in the project health reviews.

  5. In collaboration with stakeholders, engage in deliberate, forward thinking to identify and mitigate risks, soliciting and embedment of lessons learned into current and future products, opportunities to compress schedules proactively and when necessary in response to business needs.

  6. Participate in factory tests, onsite testing and commissioning and other quality checks throughout the project life cycle and in partnership with cross-functional teams to ensure proper installation and commissioning of systems and integration with other critical systems.

  7. Liaise between internal teams, consultants and contractors across projects and campus to ensure transparency, situational awareness of status and way forward, and timely resolution of issues.

  8. Maintain current awareness of project knowledge repository, status, decision, and planning documents. Maintain accurate records and documentation. Provide regular program/project updates to internal stakeholders and information sharing, priorities, and feedback to external partners.

  9. Provide technical expertise and oversight to ensure the design and construction meet the owner's requirements and industry standards for critical facility systems including Manufactured/Owner Furnished Equipment (M/OFE).

  10. Collaborate with other technical disciplines as required to ensure fully functioning, integrated systems. Actively guide Cross-Discipline technical interactions within Meta Design team and EOR to ensure multi-disciplinary team alignment.

  11. Develop and support onboarding of new teammates to ensure continuity of design support.

  12. Develop cross discipline knowledge to ensure continuity and build breadth and depth of the overall field design team.

  13. Lead Mechanical Discipline Led Design, Delivery & Quality onsite meetings to facilitate resolution of critical issues related to design.

  14. Collaborate and support in innovating Design-Construction technology and processes.

  15. Close collaboration and engagement with the Quality Team, with focus on area walk downs, critical benchmarks, systems integration and operation, issue resolution, Commissioning Script review and implementation, providing technical support and guidance on Design related matters.

  16. Support Facilities Engineering and Operations Team on knowledge sharing, technical guidance and system operation of Design throughout the project schedule.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. BS in Mechanical Engineering.

  2. 10+ years of professional experience in mission critical building design, construction and/or operations.

  3. Experience with industry standards, building codes and safety standards including UMC, NFPA, ASHRAE, UBC, UMC and LEED.

  4. Experience with Office, Google Suite, Revit/BIM, Bluebeam, Autodesk/ACC, or similar design software applications.

  5. Knowledge of HVAC Systems including Evaporative, Chilled/Condenser Water, Glycool/Glycol, Air Handling (Direct Expansion, Rooftop Units, CRAC Units, etc.), aisle containment, and Building Management/Controls Automation

  6. Knowledge of Plumbing systems including Water Treatment, Pumping Systems and Distribution, Sanitary/Waste Systems, and Storm Drainage Systems.

  7. Knowledge of Fire Protection/Fire Alarm systems such as Early Warning/Detection Systems, Double Interlock Pre-Action, and Wet Pipe Systems.

  8. Knowledge of Environmental, Health and Safety programs.

  9. Proven analytical and troubleshooting skills and making data driven decisions.

  10. Experience in Project Management and construction cost estimating processes.

  11. Presentation and communication skills to peers, stakeholders and leadership.

Public Compensation:

$144,000/year to $201,000/year + bonus + equity + benefits
