ProMedica Health System Sterile Processing Aide - Sterile Processing - Full Time - Afternoons in Monroe, Michigan

ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital offers a broad range of inpatient and outpatient services in southern Michigan and Ohio. POSITION SUMMARY

Under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures performs a variety of functions related to the care and handling or sterile supplies and instrumentation, decontamination, and processing of sterile supplies.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

  1. Collects soiled supplies and equipment for processing and maintains an inventory of sterile and clean supplies and equipment in each department. Decontaminates reusable instruments and patient equipment by means of hand prewash and disinfectant and/or hand wash with mechanical wash. Inspects/tests, assembles, and/or wrap and sterilizes all patient care supplies and equipment.

  2. Has an understanding of the principle function and application of all equipment used in or dispensed from the department; washer decontaminator, sterilizers (steam and Gas Plasma), instruments, traction, and all patient equipment.

  3. Receives written and/or telephone orders for supplies. Fills request/requisitions by obtaining items from sterile processing or store stock and delivers to the requesting area. Monitors use of supply items and replenishes as necessary, rotates inventories, and notifies appropriate personnel of shortages for reorder. Monitors patient chargeable for accuracy by means of computer entry as credits or debits.

  4. Assumes reasonability for conducting and interpreting all processing monitors, biological tests, and maintaining sterilization records.

  5. Cleans storage shelves, automated equipment, and the like according to department policy.

  6. Attends staff educational and development programs as required by regulatory agencies.

  7. Maintains quality in job functions and participates in the department quality improvement operation.

  8. Performs all related duties as requested or required Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

Certification: Candidate completes certification in Sterile Processing within 2 years of hire.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Candidates complete a Sterile Processing course certification and/or eligible to take the certification exam.

Years of Experience: 6 months experience in a sterile supply department. Operating room environment and/or knowledge of patient care supplies, equipment, and sterilization procedures.

Certification: Certification as a Sterile Processing Service Technician and/or 6 months previous experience in a sterile supply department.

ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE

Must have effective interpersonal skills to deal with all levels of hospital staff and the public. Must have capacity to maintain supplies, equipment, and surgical goods according to guidelines.

Must be able to work independently using good judgement, maintaining self-confidence, and be trustworthy. Must know computer processing and data entry. Due to continuously changing patient census/activity and staffing needs, must have the flexibility to work a varying schedule should the need arise, which may require working overtime (greater than 8 hours a day or 80 hours a pay period worked hours per week) and/or shift durations that exceed the assigned status for shift length and/or hours per week.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Demands: Working conditions vary from clean environment to unpleasant conditions when handling contaminated equipment. Must have the physical ability to walk or stand for long periods of time, lifting items weighing 15-20 pounds and pushing carts weighing 100-150 pounds. Training in body mechanics.
