Position Information
Job Title Student Assistant- Safety
General Description
This is a student position responsible for assisting in general maintenance of safety equipment and vehicles. Performs repetitive manual work for various physically demanding tasks. Works under close supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement.
Job Duties
Cares for and maintains safety equipment as instructed.
Performs light maintenance and repairs on vehicles and safety equipment.
Assists in maintaining vehicle and safety equipment records.
Cleans and fuels vehicles.
Assists with departmental inventory.
Assists with various safety and other projects involving the office and grounds.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of basic safety equipment such as fire extinguishers.
Ability to understand and follow instructions.
Ability to communicate professionally and courteously with university faculty and staff, students, and the general public.
Ability to drive a university vehicle and motorized utility vehicle.
Ability to obtain a valid driver’s license.
Ability to obtain a SFA driver’s permit upon hire.
Physical condition adequate to permit full performance of duties.
Required Qualifications
The minimum education required for admittance as a student at Stephen F. Austin State University.
No direct experience is required. Training and instruction will be provided.
Preferred Qualifications
Ability to work during the summer is preferred.
Physical Demands
Perform fire extinguisher maintenance and repairs on campus and outlying areas along with other related duties as assigned. Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs. and walk up and down stairs.
Special Conditions for Eligibility
A student must be enrolled in six or more semester hours to be eligible for student employment during the fall or spring semesters. To be eligible for student employment during the summer, a student must be enrolled in three or more semester hours or be registered for courses in the upcoming fall semester.
Student assistants may not hold any other type of position such as a graduate assistantship or temporary casual employment at the same time that they are employed as a student assistant.

Work Schedule Safety Dept. hours are Monday-Friday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. The required work hours are flexible but the student must work a minimum of 20 hours per week. May require more hours in January and work through the summer.
Min Pay Rate $7.50/hr
