Traffic Signal Technician

PRINCIPAL PURPOSE OF JOB: The purpose of this position is to provide a variety of operations, maintenance and repair duties on traffic signal and street light equipment. 

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY: The individual will be responsible for the general operation and maintenance of electrical and electronic equipment and various communication interfaces between Distributed System Components as well as general street lighting maintenance.  

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Programs, maintains and repairs the city's emergency pre-emption stem.                                                  

• Programs, maintains and repairs traffic signal control units and associated system components and      

  associated monitoring equipment.       

• Programs, maintains and repairs flashing school zone sign controls. 

• Safely operates a motor vehicle for the purpose of inspecting traffic signal installations and other related                 

  projects.

• Maintains appropriate and accurate records for work performed. 

• Maintains and repairs all City owned street lighting.

• Performs other duties and special projects as assigned. 

QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or equivalent and at least (3) years of practical experience in electrical/electronic operations, maintenance and repair.  

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

• Knowledge of traffic control systems including the installation and maintenance procedures for traffic.

• Ability to operate an aerial platform with a working height of 40 ft.

• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the work.

• Knowledge of electronic testing and diagnostic equipment.    

• Must be familiar with and effectively use proprietary signal system software. 

• Must possess a valid MS driver's license and safe driving record.

• Pass a pre-employment drug screen/alcohol and background investigation.  

• Must be legally authorized to work in the USA and have the ability to perform the duties of the job for an   

  entire day and work an erratic schedule with some holiday, weekend and overtime work is required.    

• Excellent skills both verbal and written.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. The employee must be able to sit, stand, bend, stoop, walk and lift (20) pounds minimum.

2. The employee must be able to work in various weather conditions and must not be afraid of heights.
