New York Times Financial Manager, Revenue and General Accounting in New York, New York

Job Description

The Role:

You will manage the accurate recording of revenue, expense and balance sheet areas observing financial policy and procedures and generally accepted accounting principles. You will lead daily accounting activities of assigned areas, and ensure compliance of accounting procedures, internal controls, and Sarbanes-Oxley controls. You will manage the proper accounting of revenue and documenting accounting conclusions using technical guidance, including ASC606. You can also query and analyze data sets, summarize data in a concise and meaningful manner, and highlight insights that help inform validating recorded transactions. This role will be a contributor to special projects and will report directly to the Assistant Controller.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage accounting activities in assigned balance sheet, revenue and expense areas. Activities include preparing, reviewing and supervising monthly closing, reserve and accrual analysis, and balance sheet reconciliations.

  • Guide, manage and coach accounting team member.

  • Accurate accounting in compliance with GAAP and with Company financial procedures, all while ensuring internal controls.

  • Review customer contracts and other transactions and ensure the proper accounting observing ASC606 or other relevant accounting standards.

  • Document conclusions for approval by senior management and auditors.

  • Plan and coordinate research of technical accounting issues, including those related to revenue recognition and to the accruals and deferrals of multiple revenue and expense activities. Monitor activities of standard setting bodies (FASB and SEC). Document accounting conclusions for approval by senior management and external auditors.

  • Query, mine, analyze and report on data sets and use data analytics tools to validate and support recorded transactions.

  • Support Sarbanes-Oxley work, including the preparation of quarterly and annual assessments, testing, review, and remediation of test exceptions, as assigned by the Director of Corporate Compliance.

  • Collaborate with colleagues in operating departments to foster communication, improve processes and controls, and ensure the accuracy of accounting, reporting, and analysis.

  • Work with multiple partners on the team including the ability to understand business objectives and translate them into transactional and reporting impacts

  • Support and provide documentation to Internal and External Auditors as needed and during quarter-end and year-end reporting periods.

  • Collaborate with multiple business partners to provide guidance on accounting transactions, inform forecasts, and contribute to special projects such as applying additional functionality in Workday.

  • Prepare ad-hoc reporting and analysis as needed, including the creation of analysis for decision support.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance

  • Experience of 5+ years public/private accounting

  • CPA required.

  • Knowledge of technical accounting pronouncements and standards (GAAP, FASB).

  • Advanced excel skills (i.e. macros)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Workday

The annual base pay range for this role is between $115,000.00 and $125,000.00.
