Position reports to: Dean of Student Support; Student Support Specialists

Details: Expected to be in person for specific program dates, including training from 7/1-7/3 8:00am – 4:00pm, and the NYSA Program from 7/7-8/15 M-F 8:00 am – 4:00 pm (Minimum 15 hours per week, preference to candidate seeking more hours)

The International Rescue Committee (IRC), works in the United States welcomes newly arrived refugees and immigrants, supports them in their resettlement, and provides holistic services to help them build new lives in their communities.

The Newcomer Youth Summer Academy is a six-week program focusing on preparing newly arrived youth to succeed at their grade level in the New York City public school system. Up to 130 students ages 5 – 21 from over 20 countries will participate in academic, creative arts, physical education, and social emotional learning classes. Field Trips are held on Fridays.

The Family Engagement Intern will work with the Student Support Team to coordinate communication between the program and parents & caregivers both leading up to and during the program. Example tasks include program enrollment confirmation calls, organizing parent-teacher conferences, and invitations for parents to attend such events as graduation. The Family Engagement Intern will also conduct outreach to parents of students who are absent or tardy, using interpretation services if necessary; interns will facilitate other family contact as well, for purposes not related to behavioral concerns such as reminders of community events, field trips, etc. The Family Engagement Intern will also assist in organizing post-program Caregiver Surveys, as well as referring families for additional services. They will also complete other tasks and duties as assigned.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Participate in Student Support Team onboarding in June, attend all staff training, and be present for program meetings and staff development activities thereafter

· Assist with direct outreach to families for program enrollment and confirmation, including dispersal of informational materials and pre-assessments

· Assist with facilitating late student arrival and early dismissals

· Compile attendance data in the excel tracker and/or other internal systems every morning during the Academy

· Conduct outreach to the families of absent/tardy students, using interpretation services as needed

· Assist in the coordination and set up of Parent Teacher Conferences

· Coordinate and perform outreach to families by inviting them to special events, including the Talent Show, International Food and Fashion Show, and similar events

· Support with distribution and collection of required student forms during the program

· Lead distribution of the weekly family newsletter

· Complete all required reporting, observation documentation, and case noting on time.

· Support with post-academy needs such as survey distribution

· Comply with all agency policies and protocols

· Other relevant duties as assigned, including but not limited to:

· Facilitate programmatic outreach to families, reminding them of upcoming events and sending relevant info

· Support with input of behavioral observation and intervention data into relevant trackers

· Assist with translations of newsletters, memos, and more

· Supporting other teams with facilitation or administrative work

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Interns will gain skills and experience in communications and outreach to newcomer families, learning to use interpretation services and navigate cultural differences.

  2. Interns will contribute meaningfully to data collection and management in a non-profit setting.

  3. Interns will develop their understanding of the landscape of community resources and services available across NYC

    REQUIREMENTS:

    · Volunteers must be based in the U.S. Interns must be based in the US, must be a US citizen or have US work authorization, must be enrolled in a post-secondary institution, or have graduated from a post-secondary institution within the last 2 years.

    · Undergraduate or graduate student in Psychology, Social Work, Education, or a related field preferred.

    · Strong interpersonal and communication skills

    · Experience working with refugee and/or immigrant populations preferred

    · Organized, reliable, and flexible

    · Ability to work independently and as part of a team

    · Fluency in written and spoken English required. Second language proficiency in relevant language highly desirable (including Spanish, Ukrainian, Russian, Haitian Creole, French, Pashto, Fulani, Wolof, Dari, Farsi, Arabic, Mandingo, Nepali, Tigrinya, Mam, Garifuna)
