NewsNation is a 24-hour national cable network based in Chicago, reaching nearly 70 million homes is seeking a Sr. Software Engineer with strong knowledge of Ross systems front to back, including VB scripting - the ability to dig into code when something can’t be accomplished in the GUI or Visual Logic.

JavaScript, HTML, CSS and experience with Unreal would be a major plus.

The ability to work collaboratively and constructively across varied disciplines is required.

These include working with the Head of Network Design, engineering and journalists with the skills to work hand-in-hand with and “speak the language of the newsroom” helping refine ideas into concepts that are technically viable and visually compelling.

Job Responsibilities:

• Works closely with NewsNation creative leadership, editorial and engineering staff on all aspects of real-time dynamic graphics using the Ross Video XPression suite, including Designer, Tessera, ClipStore and Project Server.

• Works hand-in-hand with graphic designers and “speaks the language of the newsroom,” helping journalists refine their ideas into concepts that are technically viable and visually compelling.

• Assists with implementation and support for all on-air graphic workflows with MOS templates, Newsroom Plugin and overall graphics system health.

• Collaborates with editorial staff and provides tips on using graphics technology for better visual storytelling.

• Able to understand, troubleshoot and strong knowledge of languages such as VBScript, JavaScript, HTML and CSS.

• Takes charge of implementing new graphics technologies and technical infrastructure for the news operation.

• Ability to build rapport with end-users and vendors to efficiently address issues.

• Responsible for technical coordination between graphics, news producers, on-air graphics operators and other control room staff.

• Must be detail oriented, possess strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to handle multiple projects/issues simultaneously and meet deadlines.

Requirements & Skills:

• Bachelor’s degree in information systems, or equivalent combination of education and work experience required

• 5 years of experience working in a professional live broadcast television network.

• Strong Engineering background required.

• Experience with Ross Video XPression graphics systems, file transcoding, and newsroom systems a plus.

• Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments, and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

• All day parts (mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays) may be a part of the schedule with overtime as breaking news situations demand.

• Some travel between broadcast centers in Chicago and New York required

The Sr. Software Engineer will report to the Head of Network Design and work closely with others on the Ross real-time graphics team helping to produce, direct, support and manage projects to meet deadlines.
