The Role
Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.
This Mechanical System/Process Engineer position will be providing technical oversight for shipbuilding manufacturing equipment and processes. They will be part of the Digital Plant team focused on improving equipment reliability and availability. Additionally, they will be tasked with understanding manufacturing production process and driving improvements with the goal of increasing overall shop throughput. This candidate will be involved in developing digital tools to support the manufacturing process and associated equipment. The Mechanical System/Process Engineer will be required to develop a cohesive working relationship with manufacturing operators and maintenance personnel. The candidate should have extensive knowledge of mechanical conveyance systems, large scale welding and burning equipment, robotic systems, metal plate bending and forming equipment and/or lathes and CNC machines.
The candidate’s day-to-day responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues within assigned equipment and system(s)
Provide engineering resolutions for system problems/configuration changes
Produce and/or oversee the development of technical documentation that govern the equipment design, configuration, and operation.
Develop a long range strategic plan for improvements to assigned equipment and system(s)
Initiate and support the development/execution of planned maintenance requirements
Lead the resolution of unplanned events
Develop and maintain critical equipment/system metrics (Uptime/Downtime, Mean Time to Repair (MTTR), Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF), performance to design, PM Compliance, OEE, etc.)
Participate in project design and implementation process for equipment/system related projects
Oversee project/system testing to ensure system meets technical requirements and operates at peak performance
Must Have
Bachelor’s Degree and 14 years of relevant exempt experience
Master’s Degree and 12 years of relevant professional experience;
Ph.D. and 9 years of experience.
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
Nice to Have
Mechanical Engineering degree with a Professional Engineering (PE) license, or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) working towards PE registration
Strong Interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written
Ability to think strategically, act tactically, work well with others, and support a safe and highly engaged work environment.
Experience with personal computer applications, especially word processing and spreadsheet applications
Strong Analytic and problem solving skills
Experience with Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW) and Gas Metal Arc Welding (GAMW) and SubArc Welding (SAW) Welding processes
Shipyard manufacturing and/or facilities experience
Familiar with 2D and 3D CAD software
Experience with Modeling and Simulation
Experience with modern shipbuilding design practices
Experience with Programmable Logic Control (PLC’S) systems and associated instrumentation
Experience with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Systems and associated software
