Description
Job Title: Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) - Medical Oncology
Job Summary: The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) in Medical Oncology provides direct clinical support to oncologists and healthcare providers in a fast-paced oncology practice. This role involves patient care, administrative tasks, and ensuring the smooth operation of the oncology department. The CMA will assist in delivering high-quality care to oncology patients by providing both clinical and administrative support.
Key Responsibilities:
Patient Care:
Prepare patients for examination, including taking vitals, recording medical histories, and performing basic diagnostic tests.
Assist oncologists during patient exams, procedures, and treatments, ensuring a safe and comfortable environment for patients.
Administer medications as prescribed and within scope of practice
Draw blood and assist with laboratory specimen collection and processing.
Educate patients about their medical conditions, treatment plans, and side effects related to chemotherapy or other oncology treatments.
Monitor and document patient progress, including changes in vital signs or symptoms.
Clinical Support:
Set up exam rooms and maintain proper medical supplies.
Perform routine screenings, such as EKGs or other necessary diagnostic tests.
Provide follow-up calls to patients regarding lab results or other medical issues.
Maintain accurate, up-to-date patient records in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
Administrative Support:
Schedule patient appointments, including follow-ups, diagnostic tests, and procedures.
Ensure all patient paperwork is properly completed and updated.
Assist in preparing insurance verification and pre-authorization processes for oncology treatments and medications.
Process patient referrals and communicate with insurance companies and other healthcare providers.
Maintain clean and organized medical records.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Active Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification from an accredited program.
Minimum of 1-2 years of experience as a CMA, preferably in a medical oncology or related field.
Strong knowledge of medical terminology, oncology treatments, and medications.
Familiarity with chemotherapy administration, patient education, and related procedures.
CPR and First Aid certification required.
Proficiency in using electronic health record (EHR) systems.
Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with chemotherapy protocols and oncology-specific software.
Work Environment:
Work is typically performed in a clinical oncology setting, which may include interactions with patients undergoing chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and other cancer treatments.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand for extended periods.
Ability to lift and move medical equipment or supplies up to 25 lbs.
Frequent bending, walking, and reaching.
