Job Description
The Custodial Supervisor, under the direction of the Services Manager, supervises the work activities of assigned shift custodians. The Custodial Supervisor assigns custodial tasks, inspects work, and solves routine issues. This position is also responsible for providing custodial services.
Responsibilities
Directly supervise custodial staff, including hiring processes, setting of expectations, training and professional development, performance management and evaluations, and disciplinary processes including termination of employment.
Provide on-site supervision across multiple buildings, carrying materials and supplies as needed using campus carts or street vehicles.
Coordinate and manage shift schedules of custodians.
Assign workers to fill temporary or permanent vacancies.
Monitor employee attendance and evaluate work performance of custodial staff, ensuring quality and scheduling standards are met.
Conduct inspections of various areas such as public areas, elevators, stairs, study lounges, computer labs, janitor rooms, breakrooms, storage rooms, restrooms, showers, kitchens, and laundry areas to ensure proper cleaning, maintenance, security, and safety measures have been carried out.
Note deficiencies such as the need for repair of equipment or recleaning of rooms and take corrective action by instructing custodians or notifying the proper authorities.
Keep records of work activities and submit oral and written reports.
Approve or recommend approval for any requests for leaves of absence by custodial staff.
Inspect workstations and oversee requisition and distribution of supplies and equipment as needed.
Manage inventory of supplies and equipment.
Support Services Manager with administrative and operational tasks and assignments.
Essential Skills
Experience in cleaning, mopping, and sweeping.
Ability to maintain good working relationships and exercise initiative and good judgment in organizing work and solving routine problems.
Knowledge of all custodial methods, materials, and equipment used in the work.
Ability to provide direct feedback to staff and take corrective action when necessary to ensure compliance with standards, policies, and procedures.
Knowledge of cleaning procedures related to institutional settings and cleaning supplies, or ability to be trained in such areas.
Superior attention to detail.
Strong customer service orientation.
Excellent communication skills and ability to interact professionally with a variety of students, faculty, staff, and others.
Ability to speak, read, understand, and carry out labels, directions, and work orders in English at a level of proficiency required by the duties of this position.
Excellent common sense and ability to use good judgment to carry out written or oral instructions, generally in a sequence or with scheduled work activities occurring on a regular basis.
Ability to operate cleaning equipment such as vacuums, ride-on vacuums, carpet extractors, and other cleaning equipment as necessary.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Ability to do minor vacuum and equipment repair is preferred but not required.
